Wixom is a city in the southern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 20,521 at the 2010 census. Wixom is one of the most rapidly growing cities in Michigan and has been ranked as one of America's "Fastest-Growing Cities" for six consecutive years. In 2009, Forbes listed Wixom as the number two place to live in Michigan. The city was founded on April 12, 1867 by William Fenton and his wife Eliza Ann Witcher with the goal of creating a town that would be "a model for other farming communities to emulate." The first settler in what would become Wixom was George Haggerty from Ireland who arrived on May 11th, 1867. Haggerty donated land to the community which included three pieces of land that he had acquired near Hudsonville. In 1870, David Gunnarson purchased property within the present-day boundaries of Wixom from Haggerty and began construction on what would become known as Gunnarson's Landing or Gator Pointe Inn. This inn became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Detroit and Grand Rapids and later served as a restaurant and hotel before being demolished in 1916. On October 15th, 1881, when Wixom celebrated its 1st anniversary following incorporation as a village, Judge Augustus Bowers appointed John Aiken Mayor with power over all aspects of civic life including economic development. On December 9th 1893 James Kapp made history when he became the first African American registered to vote in this area when he cast his ballot at Village Hall. From 1902 until 1925 there were no African Americans registered to vote in any municipality within 25 miles (40 km) of Detroit except for Willson Park Township where Booker T Washington lived from 1915 until his death in 1920; however voting rights were granted to African Americans through legislation passed by then Governor Canfield during World War I despite protests from local business owners who felt that their workers should not be given preferential treatment due to their race

The area that now makes up Wixom was first settled by French Canadian fur traders in 1789 as la Petite-Rivière-du-Loup (the Little River), after they were forced out of their original land by Native Americans. The name may be derived from "wicon" meaning "a stream with sandbanks," or "xome" meaning "a place where there are trees." In 1825, when Michigan became a territory of the United States, it included what is now Wixom within its boundaries. In 1826, following Comstock’s Treaty between America and Great Britain recognizing American control over Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River as well as east of that river to include all present day Michigan except for Detroit, Wixom post office opened under this new name; it continued to do so until 1959 when it changed to its current one. The initial settlers were primarily English colonists who arrived during the early 1800s looking for land to settle in what would become America's far northwest corner—the region around Mackinac Island had been disputed between France and England since 1665. By 1800 more than 100 families had settled in what would become Wixom Township on both sides of Saginaw River—8 miles wide at its widest point and home to around 350 people at its peak according to one report—making it one of America's earliest townships organized along racial lines。 Only white residents could vote in township elections until 1830 when black residents were allowed to do so through court order following an act sponsored by then-Congressman Andrew Johnson (). At first these black residents worked primarily as farmers but soon began building housing and businesses close to their homes which helped spur development in nearby Flint suburbia; some local historians credit this period for helping make Flint into one of America's leading cities during the 19th century despite having few resources other than natural gas available for operation
