Westland, Michigan is a small town in theU.S. state of Michigan that is home to the University of Michigan's School of Optometry. The school was founded in 1881 as an agricultural school. It became a university in 1865, and now offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in optometry and other allied health sciences. The School of Optometry has a library with over 450,000 books and periodicals dating back to 1881. In addition, the School of Optometry has made extensive contributions to optometric science through its research programs, teaching methods, and publication outputs.

Westland is a city in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Westland were French traders and missionaries in 1795. They named it "Guyenne". When Russia acquired a large tract of land east of Detroit in 1812, they renamed it "Westland" after their province of Western Russia. The town began to grow rapidly due to waves of immigrants, especially Poles, Russians and Germans who had come during the American Revolution and soon after, during the War for Independence. By 1827, Westland had over 1,300 people and was one of the largest towns in Michigan. During prohibition years (1937–1941), many businesses were closed because alcohol was not considered a legal product in Michigan. Some residents did manage to get around this by buying moonshine or bootleg liquor from other states or Canada; however, most residents avoided alcohol altogether as it became very expensive and difficult to obtain without breaking law. In 1932, John Dorney founded Dorney Gardens amusement park which remains an important tourist attraction today across from downtown Westland on US-23 near Kalamazoo River bridges

In 1824, when John Westfall founded Westland, he named it for his father, Nathaniel Westfall (1784-1847), a general in the Mexican War who had settled near what is now East Lansing Township on Peninsular Road east of downtown Detroit; also called Niles or Nineveh Plains because so many miles wide this area was covered by flat land that supported no trees or other plants until after thousands years under heavy ice sheets deposited more than 12 feet (3 m) deep over much of North America during glacial periods including extensive forestation alongPeninsulaRoad before human habitation began about 8000 BC). George Washington visited Niles Plains twice while he was President between 1799-1800 spotted Mt. Westland, Michigan was a small town in the panhandle of Michigan that experienced some spectacular natural disasters. In 1863, a severe blizzard hit the area and destroyed many homes and businesses. The townsfolk were able to rebuild quickly but suffered again in 1868 when an express train derailment killed twenty-five people and injured more than seventy. Overall, these two disasters caused significant damage to Westland’s infrastructure and economy.
