The name "Westland" originated with an event on October 15 when a group of men led by Jno Cushing planted flags on nearby hills to commemorate General George Washington's victory over France at Yorktown (the Battle of Saratoga). On January 10th, 1925 (4 years after Lansing annexing parts of what is now unincorporated Westland), the first gas station was opened in what would become known as Center Park Shopping Center - which still stands today! The community experienced rapid growth during World War II due to wartime production related businesses such as munitions plants and leather manufacturing; however it gradually slipped into obscurity following World War II until it reemerged during the 1990s boom period when new businesses began moving into town including technology firms such as Intel and Microsoft; software development companies like Autonomy Software; and health care services providers like Wellmark Health Services Inc.. At present day there are no active businesses or residential areas within town limits but many people commute to larger settlements such as Detroit or Grand Rapids for work or entertainment purposes. In addition to its role in local commerce, independent schools serve students living within walking distance of downtown while anchor institutions like Eastman Kodak have relocated away from town since they retired from film production in 2006. Despite these challenges, Town Manager Barb Currier reports that "Westland has made some valuable contributions both inside and outside our community." She goes on to say that "I am confident that our strategy will continue to grow while we work towardsdevelopment plans which include more housing options for our citizens."

By 1840, Westland had become an important center for commerce on Michigan's Lower Peninsula due to its location at the mouth of the Arenac River and its access to navigable waterways. During World War I (1914-18), Westland served as one of several military camps located on or near Muskegon Heights Army Airfield east of downtown Grand Rapids; this airfield was used primarily for training pilots during World War I but also played an important role in later conflicts such as World War II when it became known as "The Big Three" airfields responsible for providing fighter aircraft capability across all three services throughout Western Canada and parts of North America: Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), United StatesAAF (USAAF), and British Commonwealth RAF (BAC). In 1945, followingthe end of World War II, American forces withdrew from western Canada while British Commonwealth forces remained until their own withdrawal in 1949; as a result, both service facilities were closed down during those years. However, they remain active tourist destinations today thanks to their associated museums and attractions - most notably The Big Three Airfields Museum which features exhibits about RCAF activity at Muskegon Heights Army Airfield between 1945-49) .

The Westland area in Michigan was settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. The first European to arrive was Jean Baptiste Marquette, who journeyed from France in 1795 and landed on the east side of the Lower Peninsula. He named the area what is now known as Marquette Township, after his mentor and friend, Father Marquette. In 1801, French-born Ignace Dupont founded the town of Detroit on land that he purchased from the Huron Tribe. In 1814, James Kagin purchased a tract of land near what is now Midtown Detroit from Chief Joseph Chisholm. The area became part of Wayne County until it was merged with Oakland County in 1934.
