Later that year Elisha Stephenson founded the Stephenson Paper Mill here which continued operations until 1902 when it closed due to low demand for paper products during the Great Depression. The first post office was established at Westland on October 3, 1854 with Wm Halsey as mail carrier from Holland Patent Post Office; post offices were abolished following the creation of ZIP codes starting with 91701 in 1959. In 1872 when Lansingburgh Township was organized north of present day Woodward Avenue, parts of Lapeer County lying east of I-75 were transferred to Lansingburgh Township including much of what would be today's western quarter section of Westland including all or part of present day Bloomfield Hills and Dearborn Heights/Westwood Park neighborhoods as well as most or all portions of Redford Township north thereof including much or all of Bloomfield Hills now known as Northville Heights/Woodward Heights and eastern portion now known as MidtownEastside along with much or all portions now known as Wyandotte Heights/Southwest Side along with parts now known as South Lyon Heights/. . . On January 17th 1888 The village charter officially changed its name from "Bloomfield" to "Westland". According to the 2000 US Census Bureau estimate (counting unincorporated areas only), there are 2,522 people living in zip code 91701 within community limits whose full legal name may appear more like "WestLAND".

The Grosse Pointe Company became one of America's leading transportation companies during the 19th century due to its monopoly on steamboat traffic between Lakes Superior and Huron (the primary source of drinking water for northwestern Michigan). It also developed large estates along many key rivers throughout northeastern Michigan – including Marquette, Battle Creek, Hillsdale, Shiawassee and Ottawa – resulting in extensive commercial agriculture as well as milling operations capable of producing flour into machine parts until it was replaced by chemical production during World War II In 1836, James Kapp purchased 640 acres (2 km²) nearpresent day Westland Avenue extending into Oakland County from Nicholas Detroit's estate following Kapp's discovery of rich copper ore near Mount Pleasant on Janesville Township north of present day East Lansing Kapp named his new township after himself – Westland Township – based on his discovery that coal seams extended downslope midway between Mount Pleasant proper and Grand Rapids proper . With access to cheap land east of US 131 via I-75 then only accessible by foot or wagon train travel over long distances weekdays during off season; this rapid population growth led to development around Kapptown including several schools (Grange School being erected in 1843), churches (Methodist Episcopal Church having their first services there in1847), lumberyards (later becoming Cassia Lumber Co.), brickyards ( later becoming Western Flint Manufacturing Co.) & breweries (& later still aluminum smelters) all within easy walking distance todays! In 1803, the United States purchased the land that would become Westland from the Great Lakes region. The area became one of Michigan's first counties and was named for General Lewis Cass. The first courthouse in what is now Westland was built in 1810. In 1815, the county seat was moved to Bellefontaine where it remains today. Westland experienced some growth during the early 1800s as a result of its location on the newly founded Michigan Central Railroad. Development continued into the 19th century as businesses and people began to move into what is now parts of downtown Westland. Some residents remember when there were no sidewalks or streetlights in their neighborhood, so they had to use whatever means possible to get around. During World War II, many jobs were created in Westland thanks to the military presence there. Afterward, much of the development took a backseat as new housing came onto the market and infrastructure projects were started such as Interstate 94 which runs through town today.
