From its early days as a small town in the heart of Michigan’s rural farming area, Westland has been an important center for firearm manufacturing and sales. One of the earliest firearms manufacturers in the state, W.C. Brown & Son, was located in Westland from 1868 to 1871. In that time period, rifle and shotgun manufacturers also operated out of the town. In addition to its gun manufacturing capabilities and presence throughout Michigan, Westland also had a significant role in the development of ammunition sales in the state. Fred Crouch founded Crouch Ammunition Company in 1903 out of a shop on Main Street. The company produced rounds for both rifles and shotguns until 1953 when it merged with Remington Arms Company to become Remington Arms Corporation (RAC). From then on, RAC continued to produce Ammunition products under several different names including Winchester Ammunition Company (1906-1967), NATO Ammunition Corporation (1968-1988), Weatherby Ammunition Corporation (1989-2006) and now American Eagle Ammo Company Incorporated (2007-)

The first European settlement in what is now Westland, Michigan was made in 1837 by John Skene and his brother, David. The site that is now known as Westland was part of the Miami-Illinois alliance which fought French forces during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1839, a post office was established at Westland and remained open until it was discontinued in 1915. In 1863, the town of Westland became a county seat of Shiawassee County. The county courthouse and jail were built in 1865 and 1869 respectively. In 1907, the town of Westland merged with East Lansing to form Lansing Township. In 1911, Lansing Township changed its name toWestland Township again. In 1916, World War I began and due to the war effort, many farmers moved into the area around Westland from other parts of Michigan. This led to increased population growth inWestland over the next few decades until it reached its peak at around 507 people in 1940. During World War II, many more farmers migrated into the area because they believed that there would be no conflict because it would be controlled by America instead of Nazi Germany or Japan. However, while World War II ended successfully for most countries involved, Nazi Germany failed to conquer Europe so their program started again called "Auschwitz" which killed six million Jews including 600 thousand Polish civilians who had been stranded on Auschwitz concentration camp when German forces retreated eastward following their victory over Poland on September 17th 1944
