The first expansion of the Westland, Michigan store was in 1922 when the company built a new building on the west side of the street. The second expansion took place in 1938 when the company opened a new building on Dearborn Avenue. Since World War II, large numbers of jobs have been created here by defense contractor Lockheed Martin as well as other businesses such as Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation .

Westland, Michigan is a small town in the lower Peninsula of Michigan and is located on the west side of the Ottawa River. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Westland was established in 1800 by fur traders with the name "Fort William". In 1827, land east of the river was purchased from David Dudley Field by Jacob Riis for $5,000. On July 6, 1829, James M. Westmoreland became one of two men appointed to plat out a town here on that land and named it after himself. For many years until 1898 when it changed to its current name, Westland consisted mostly of agricultural plantations used for raising horses and cattle. In 1871, local entrepreneurs Fenton & Willis bought an interest in the Detroit Central Railroad which had been leased from state officials for $3 per mile. They began construction on a new line called "The Northern" which would run from Detroit to Lansing and connect with other railways there. The first train ran between Detroit and Lansing on December 4, 1871! This railroad helped spur development in areas such as East Lansing and Watertown (now Grand Rapids). Unfortunately for Fenton & Willis they lost their lease when it expired in 1893; however their legacy lives on today as part of CSX Transportation's Lines affiliate Wolverine Incorporated Lineage Operations company area including: Shaker Heights-Lansing-Watertown-East Lansing-Grand Rapids
Westland, Michigan was founded in 1837 as a township in Potter Township. On January 1, 1851, the town of Westland became a village. On December 12, 1909, the village of Westland became a city. The population of the city increased from 467 to 910 by 1920. The population decreased to 714 by 1930 and 825 by 1940. The city's population decreased again to 511 by 1960 and 471 by 1970. In 1990, the City of Westland merged with neighboring East Lansing to form Lansing metropolitan area.
