In 2002, General Motors announced it would close its last factory here by 2019; however, this has not happened yet and the plant is still open to operation as an operations center for GM's North American operations.[2]

The first settlers in Westland, Michigan were John and Ann (Foley) Marshall who arrived in 1834. The town was named for General James Wilkinson, the hero of the Battle of Lake Erie. The territory that now includes Westland was part of MI in 1840 when it was organized as a township. In 1847, the township became a village and in 1870, it became an incorporated city. Westland is located on the shore of Detroit River near Mackinac Island. It's one of the few communities on Michigan's Upper Peninsula that isn't founded by humans! Animals first settled in what is now Westland in pre-historic times, but no evidence has been found to support human presence there during this time period. There may have been some animal domestication here though no evidence exists to support this claim. In 1834, John Marshall and Ann Foley moved from Indiana to start a farm on what is now Mackinac Island which they named "Marshall's Harbor". This farm eventually grew into what is today known as Westland Township. In 1850, Holland Ford donated land to make way for a new town called "Westland" after his business partner Amos Wright had died suddenly years earlier while traveling through MI on business. The name comes from General James Wilkinson who fought at the Battle of Lake Erie against Native Americans and lost his right arm due to injury sustained during that battle. The first post office opened in Westland on October 15th, 1850 and remained open until 1865 when it was moved to Lansing because of growing population demands within the expanding city limits at that time! In 1907, both villages merged into one incorporated city with their own mayor/council system! As Commerce City began annexing surrounding villages over time (and later becoming unincorporated), Mayor Elmer Sibley successfully lobbied for incorporation as an incorporated municipality so he could continue running City Hall… even though he technically never served as Mayor since he wasn’t elected by residents! Today, much like then-Mayor Sibley did back then – City Manager Rick Fenton oversees day-to-day operations inside City Hall despite not having any official vote or power over municipal decisions made outside of its walls! And just like back then – Council members are responsible for carrying out Mayor Sibley’s wishes while also playing important roles working closely with other Council members representing adjoining municipalities 😉
Westland was a town in St. Clair County, Michigan, United States from 1855 to 1865. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census.
