In 1916, during World War I, General Motors decided to build a plant in what would become Westland; it opened in 1922 and continued operations until 1957. The plant employed over 60% of all workers in western Michigan at its peak; today production takes place only within GM's Ferrovial North America unit based in Warrensburg,. The plant closed due to economic conditions but also because GM wanted to divest itself of older plants throughout eastern United States which were not profitable anymore - this led to job losses throughout western Michigan as well as elsewhere across GM's empire).
