In 1824, General Anthony Wayne's army destroyed a small village near what is now downtown Marquette after learning that its inhabitants were planning to resist British occupation during the War for Independence. In 1828, George authorized construction of a town site on upper Mackinac Island which became Westland after land speculators bought it from the natives for $1 an acre (0.40 hectares). The town had no public buildings until 1829 when a schoolhouse and jail were built; also, a sawmill and gristmill facilities were erected soon afterwards. A post office was chartered in 1830 but did not operate until 1840 when John Hennepin established his farmstead at Point Isabelle southeast of town limits; this location became known as Hennepin Point after him. In 1836, two structural changes were made to westward housing development: one providing for grading streets parallel to shoreline instead of perpendicular so that homes could be built closer together; and another allowing wide use of front porch entrances without having home windows on both sides so that dwellings could be seen from most any direction within their respective blocks or neighborhoods marketing areas such as “the Landing” southwest corner lot #2 (currently faces Huron Street)

Westland is a small city in the state of Michigan, about twenty-five miles east of Lansing. It was founded by Peter West and his brother James in 1825 as a village on the east side of the Ottawa River. The town grew quickly, and by 1830 it had a population of over one hundred. By 1835, Westland had become an agricultural center with tannery, flour mill, sawmill, blacksmith shop, and store. In 1839, the town was incorporated as a village under the name Westland Township. In 1847–48, when Michigan became a state, Westland voted to join the new state based on its location on the eastern border of Indiana Territory. On February 14th of that year, westland Mercantile Company president Isaac Brock approved incorporation into what would be known as "the Wolverine State." In 1840s and 1850s there were several attempts to establish railways through or near Westland. The first successful railway connection between Lansing and Detroit was made in1846 by entrepreneur Augustus Kelley with construction starting in 1849 but no completed track has been found since then. In 1860s an unsuccessful attempt was made to connect Detroit with Ann Arbor via Lyon Township; this route followed today's I-75 corridor north from Lansing to Royal Oak before turning southwest towards Crystal City along M-10 until it connected with US-56 at Holly (now part of Farmington Hills). The peak period for manufacturing activity took place during World War II when paper products such as newsprint and cigarettes were produced at nearby Wayne County Arsenal production facilities; these plants closed after the war but left their legacy behind inWestland which continues to produce printed materials such as newspapers and magazines today.
