Westland is a small town in Lioa County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1836, during the Mexican-American War, General James K. Polk sent an army to Westland to fight American forces under Genrel Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The battle took place on July 8 and resulted in a victory for Santa Anna over Polk's force of 7500 soldiers with 7000 killed and 5400 wounded. In 1847, Westland was incorporated as a village by order of the Michigan Legislature from among the villages in Lioa County that had failed to ratify the act creating Michigan as a state on November 3, 1846. The first post office in Westland was established on December 17, 1851; it was renamed Clintonville in 1865 when postal service between Clintonville and Lansing began. In 1897, Westland became one of four villages consolidated into the larger city of Grand Rapids. In 1932, due to prohibition laws passed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program as part of his " pubic health initiative", several businesses in Grand Rapids closed their doors including those run by Wm J Murphy and Al Smith (the two largest brewers at the time). Many residents chose to leave or boycott drinking establishments associated with New Deal policies throughout America because they violated traditional moral values which were seen as detrimental to economic development and social stability during this time period; these values included abstinence from alcohol while livingin open houses known as "swilling contests". As a result of this decision many businesses not clustered around central business districts such as downtownGrand Rapids rebranded themselves "dry bars" or simply called themselves "bars". In 1825, Judge John Waddell surveyed and purchased land for the new township of Westland from the Indians. The township was organized on February 14, 1826. On July 1, 1830, residents of Westland voted to incorporate as a village. On December 6, 1830, President James K. Polk approved incorporation into Detroit County as part of his plan for increasing U.S economic growth. The initial townscape consisted of about two square miles with about 100 homes and businesses located around a small creek that ran through it. By 1840, however, business had increased so much that there were over 500 residents in what is now Westland Township and Villageship One (later City of Detroit). A sawmill became one of the first businesses in town; it functioned until 1898 when it burned down due to an arsonist's act. Another early business was a store which operated between1836-1838 called "The Gilded Cage" because its owner spent $5 per week advertising free goods inside his cage! A post office was established atWestland in 1839 and remained open until 1893 when it closed due to lack of mail service; this post office is still commemorated by an iron plaque at the edge of town which says "Post Office - First opened - October 26th 1840". On November 3rd 1840 west side male citizens met to form their first government under then charter member William Davenport Jr.. Westland was first settled in 1837 by fur traders. The town was named for the Westland River, which flows through it. In 1847, the western end of Michigan became part of the United States and Westland continued to be a rural community.
