There is no doubt that the history of handguns in Westland, Michigan dates back to at least 1875. At that time, the area was part of the United States of America and there were several arsenals located in what is now the city. One such arsenal was operated by Captain Andrew J. Smith and his employees who were known for their quality firearms. In fact, many of Captain Smith's products still remain in use today. One of Major John Calhoun’s officers served as a sergeant at Captain Smith’s Arsenal and he also purchased some firearms from Captain Smith. This officer is often credited with helping to develop the revolver as we know it today. The first handgun manufactured in Westland was an internal- combustion engine powered weapon called the Cyclone which was used by Sheriff James WOODWARD during his early days in office. It’s interesting to note that this type of weapon has long been reputed to be one of the most reliable handguns ever made! The first legal purchase of a handgun in Westland occurred on November 12th, 1875 when George BUCKLAND bought a Colt .32 revolver from Captains Andrew JSmith and John Calhoun at an auction held at Hastings Place Armory. Unfortunately, due to California's new law regulating handguns at this time, Buckland had to return the firearm within two weeks because he could not obtain a license from the state! There were however other retailers who did sell handguns registered with California at this time including Captains Smith himself! It wasn't until 1907 when Westland became a city that residents began Purchasing Firearms Licenses (PFL). After years of lobbying by Mayor HARRY PATTERSON, City Council passed an ordinance providing for civilians To Purchase Firearms And Carry Them On Their Persons WithoutHaveingToRegister Them With The Police Department! This allowed citizens to lawfully possess any type or caliber handgun they desired without fear Of Being Taught How To Use It By A Law Enforcement Officer! Municipalities all over America followed suit and within just 5 years,Westland had become one of those cities!

The racial makeup of the village was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1%of the population

Westland is located on the eastern border of Macomb Township and has a total area of only 0.5 square miles (1 km²). In 1836, John Fenton founded a post office in what is now Westland and named it for his farmstead on which he resided. A contributing factor to the success of this new community was its location on Detroit River bank just south of what would become Shinnyvale Park later that year. The Fenton Post Office continued to serve as the primary address until it closed in 1853 when most residents moved to larger communities within present-day Macomb Township or took other routes into the city center. The first settler in what now forms Westland was Abram Duchatel who arrived in 1837 from Quebec with his family and started a farm about three miles southwest of present-day Westland on land donated by Samuel Hicks. From this original tract, Duchatel developed much of what occupies today's east side of town including some large tracts along Brush Road between Maple Street and Grand Rapids Boulevard and along State Road 3 near Belle Isle Lake where he built an estate known as "Duchatel's Landing". In 1840, John Waddell settled near present-day downtown Westland after purchasing 7 acres (2 ha) from Abram Duchatel for $500 dollars cash plus 10 pounds (4 kg) worth of goods per annum thereafter - making it one of the earliest successful land purchases in that area.$ According to legend, Waddell also acquired title to an additional 5 acres (2 ha) bordering Brush Road before selling it off at auction resulting in him owning almost two thirds all but one acre (0.8 km²) remaining today within modern day East Side streets borders: Prospect Avenue NW & Maple Street SE
The area now known as Westland was originally a part of the Huron Indian Reservation. The town of Westland was founded in 1837 by fur traders and trappers, and began to grow rapidly during the 1840s. By 1860, Westland had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1871, the United States government constructed the Mackinac Bridge across the Kawkaweka River in order to improve trade between Michigan and Canada. The bridge helped to spur development in Westland, and eventually led to its annexation by Michigan in 1898. Today,Westland is a small town with a population of around 100 people.
