In 1892, George A. Smith began making triggers for shotguns in Westland, Michigan. Westland is a small village in Benzie County, Michigan, United States. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. Westland is part of the Grand Rapids-Wolverine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Westland was organized on February 14, 1871 from parts of the Township of Snyder and the Town of Easton. It contained a total population of 246 people when it was established. On November 3, 1872, Westland became a borough within Benzie County and had a population of 1,500. On June 15, 1886, Benzie County accepted an offer to annexed by Lansing Township which included all but 2% of Westland's land area; this annexation created an even larger community with a combined population of 919 people as compared to 248 residents inBenzie and 1,500 residents in Easton before its incorporation into Benzie County. On July 6, 1893 the Village changed its name to Westland because it proposed that “the name would be more suggestive to residents than either township or county” (Moses & Fenton). This change may have been due to pressure from local businesses who desired their own village name no matter what county it resided in; however this decision likely coincided with increasing political subdivisions within Michigan which led to increased competition for village names among counties and townships alike. In 1902-03 there were problems with flooding caused by heavy rains that marched downriver from Canada through Michigan; soon after locals began calling for anglers’ rights legislation specifically designed to deal with these issues as well as other water woes such as high taxes levied on agricultural interests by counties and municipalities bordering Lake Huron including Detroit–Warren–Oak Park Combined Statistical Area (CSA). This conflict eventually led to village councilmembers being appointed members (but not limited) on various boards responsible for overseeing many aspects associated with public safety such as fire prevention/fighting; funding thereof came from parishioners or individual landowners who contributed at least $1 per year until 1915 when fees were raised permanently upon addition of new subdivisions intoBenziereounty without input from villagers or city officials – effectively sidelining villages like Westland growth potential further while major metropolitan areas continued growing unchecked across their borders without equal representation or impact on their smaller neighbors whose tax dollars SUPPORTED THEIR DEMOGRAPHIC ADVANCE! In 1917 revenues surpassed expenses causing two-thirds increase in assessed valuation over $10K annually while fund balance remained static despite increase in assessed value alone!

In 1833, the Michigan Territory was created from the Northwest Territory. The land that would become Westland was part of the new territory. The first settler in what is now Westland was John McLaren who came to live on a farm in 1835. In 1840, Alexander McMillin bought land in what is now Westland and started to build a cabin. He named his property "McMillin's clearing." In 1847, one of the largest companies in the United States started up in Flint and wanted to set up an industry there. They called themselves the Western Company and they made a lot of money shipping goods overland from Illinois to Detroit. But things didn't work out and they went bankrupt. That's when John McLaren got interested in farming and started building houses here. In 1857, Alexander McMillin died and his son Colson took over his property. Colson built a post office here which served as the town's first building until 1865 when it was replaced by the current building which stands today on Main Street. John McLaren had two sons: Donald and Neil McLaren who founded two other farms here- McAllister Farms east of town on Clydesdale Road (later renamed Neeley Road) and McLaren Park west of town on Geneva Avenue (later renamed McGregor Boulevard). Donald McLaren also became involved with architecture including working for McKim, Mead & White before starting his own architectural firm in 1949 which still exists today known as Allendale Architects Incorporated . Neil McLaren ran for Congress twice but lost both times because he couldn't get beyond Township levels; however he has since been involved with politics locally as chairperson for Algonquin Township Open Space District #6 East Lansing MI since 2006!
Westland was founded in 1837 by General John C. Fremont as the town of Northfield on the western edge of Detroit. The town grew quickly and by 1853 it had a population of over 5,000 people. On November 1, 1868, Westland became a city when it merged with Dearborn to form the city of Detroit.
