The first mention of what is now Westland was in 1836 when a group of prospectors discovered gold on land east of present-dayMuskegon Heights. In 1854, an act was passed by Congress to establish University Park in Muskegon Heights as a research center for Western colleges and universities; this led to heavy investment from residents in businesses such as hotels, stores, churches, and sawmills that were soon situated around University Park. During World War I, Westland became an important shipping port for munitions transported across the Straits due to its location on both sides of the river. After hostilities ended in 1918, business slowed down until Wernher von Braun started developing nearby Green Bay into one of North America's largest rocket engines production plants – which led to more investments and growth for Westland thereafter. In recent decades there has been significant redevelopment taking place within town limits with new restaurants and housing developments popping up frequently throughout downtown area while also expanding beyond that boundaries into other parts of town including Northville Road/Airport Rd., Old Northwestern Ave., Indianola Rd./Oregon Rd., Saginaw Blvd./Avery St., Maryvale Dr./Garrison Dr., Midtown Plastics Plant (now known as Midtown Arts), Chalkerville Rd./Southfield Rd., Auburn Hills Dr./St Clair Aventine Ln.—all within walking distance or less than 10 minutes’ drive from downtownWestland!

Westland is a town in Lapeer County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-East Lansing metropolitan area. The first wooden structure in Westland was built in 1853 by John Purdy as a log cabin on the east side of what is now Elmira Road. A post office called Westland was established in 1854, and the town came into being on July 1, 1857. The first school in Westland was opened in 1861 by Dr. George Henniker and his students from Dearborn Heights School District No. 2. In 1865, Rev. Wm Swayne organized a Methodist church here and started teaching Sunday school here also. By 1890 there were twelve schools in the township with over 3,000 pupils; all but one had been closed within five years because of prohibitionism or lack of financial support from the State Board of Education due to Michigan's then-unenforced ban on liquor sales to minors statewide! In 1898 an oil well near present day East Livingston Township was drilled and began production; this led to an increased demand for goods and services from local farmers which led to businesses opening up throughout the township including a grocery store (later replaced by a larger chain), two hotels/motels (now both gone), four churches (one still extant), three banks (two now extinct), two stores - one grand old store - six blacksmiths - thirty-six farm wagons - ninety-eight horse cars - four steamboats - eighty-four farms
