In 1865, George Wurtzel moved his lumber operation from Cleveland to nearby Albion and began importing larger logs for use in constructing buildings in Detroit but his company dissolved shortly afterwards due to bankruptcy allegations). Westland is a small, rural community in the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) Mackinac Bridge Area. It was once one of the most important iron and steel production centers in the United States. The community has experienced growth and decline over recent years, but its history remains valuable to those who live there. The first permanent settler in what is now Westland was Daniel Gibbs on land claimed by his father around 1798. By 1827, the area had become a part of Washtenaw County after it was organized from portions of Huron and Shiawassee Counties. The first post office in Westland was established at Wilcoxville on July 1, 1828. In 1836, John Fenton opened a mill here for flour production and other goods for local farmers. The heyday of Westland came during the late 19th century when Ironclad Ships were being built at an unprecedented rate in America thanks to advances in technology and profits from shipbuilding exports. Many workers brought their families with them when they left their homes to work on these shipsyards across the Great Lakes region. In 1903, Westland became an incorporated village under state law as part of a larger effort to promote village development throughout Michigan. This move helped make Westland one of the more progressive villages within MDOT’s jurisdiction at that time. At that point, it consisted mostly of farmland with no industry or commercial buildings other than a few small stores and residences. Through hard work and perseverance, however, Village Development Committee members worked tirelessly over many years to bring new businesses downtown including several restaurants which became nationally known such as The Golden Gloves Cafe & Diner (now White Castle), Western Auto Sales Co., First National Bank (now HSBC), KFC Midwest USA Inc., Applebees Restaurant & Sports Bar-Wine Cellar (now dive bar Pawnee Tavern), current day Jack Daniels restaurant Old Hickory BBQ fame - now called Yates Grille - as well as eventually developing much needed retail space downtown including Safeway grocery store Corporate Store/Mall; addition today's Dunkin' Donuts Center! It wasn't all smooth sailing though: In 1984 Mayor Edwin Bendixen resigned amidst charges he embezzled government funds while serving as Mayor Pro Tempore; later that year residents voted 3-1 not to join neighboring Saginaw Township in forming a new township due largely to opposition from then-Village President Artem Levin! However this didn't last long either: Just four months later Levin had been reinstated by unanimous vote after mounting pressure from residents following actions taken by Bendixen including implementing rezoning that would have made much needed housing available near Interstate 75 instead! Despite these setbacks however - villagers continued working hard together spiritually & physically towards common goals despite some tough times - culminating with today's resurgence as one of Michiganders most vibrant communities!
The first white people to arrive in what is now Westland Township were two men, John Saginaw and Nicholas Larkin, who founded the town of Saginaw on December 7, 1814. The township was organized on February 17, 1829. In 1835, it became part of the Michigan Territory. The first post office in Westland was established in 1836.
