It will overview the history of firearms in the area and discuss how they have been used to protect citizens and businesses from crime. Additionally, this paper will discuss some of the more significant incidents that have occurred in the area with regards to gun safety.

Westland, Michigan is a small town in the Kalamazoo Hills region of central Michigan. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to what is now Westland were men from Poland and Lithuania who arrived in 1824. They platted a township on land that later became Westland Township. The first post office was established in 1827, and the township was named for Colonel John Westwood, an American artillery officer during the War of 1812. In 1835, John D browse opened a store in what is now Plymouth Township which became one of the leading retail businesses in downtown Lansing. In 1861, he built a gristmill on the banks of the Big River where it joins withthe Little River to form Lower Big Raccoon Creek. This mill remained operational until 1971 when it was replaced by a newer facility located just east of town on US-10 near its junction with M-2 Drive (now I-696). In 1865, James Fenton set up a blacksmith shop in what is now Hastings Township and this business continued until 1907 when it merged into Fenton & Co., another local business operation run by James Fenton's son Edwin Fenton Jr.. In 1924, Gertrude Kapp founded Dearborn Food Stores here as one of her many enterprises catering to shoppers outside Detroit's city limits during this time period before opening her own grocery store two years later in Dearborn Heights adjacent to Ford Motor Company headquarters on Woodward Avenue Northwest. Kapp served as franchisee for over 50 years before selling her company to Albertsons Corporation after their purchase of Kapp Foods Corporation in 1997. Dearborn Heights annexed Hastings Township circa 1970 following Wayne County's decision not to pursue annexation requests from these townships due to lack of support from then-County Executive Dave Heineman despite strong opposition from both communities.. Today there are few remaining items associated with those early days such as pioneer Adobe Walls still standing at 5010 S 25th St., pioneer corncribs also still present at 4109 E 3rd Ave., or even gristmills left behind like those built by John D Browse or James Fenton because they were no longer active after 1971 when lower Big Raccoon Creek passed through town boundaries upstream towards East Lansing.... Today only resides vestiges remnants cultural artifacts such as memories shared around campfires with family throughout life long festivities including Pioneer Day Live Auction July 10th starting at 6pm

But in general, gun security has been a topic of concern for many years, primarily due to the high number of firearms fatalities each year.1 One reason for this high casualty rate is that firearms can be easilyaccessed and misused. In fact, one study found that approximately 60% of firearm fatalities occur when individuals are unaware they have a weapon at home2 — making it easier for someone to commit suicide by shooting themselves in the head with a gun they own.3 In addition, firearms can also be used to commit crimes or assassinate people. For example, robbery with a firearm is now an alarming problem in the United States4 —and so are shootings at school campuses5 and other public places6. These incidents make it difficult for victims’ families to receive justice or compensation from those responsible.7 In response to these concerns, there have been several recent efforts aimed at increasing gun security measures across the country8-10. One such initiative was The Violence Reduction Project11 which was created in 2002 by President George W. Bush as part of his push for stricter gun control laws following the Columbine School Shooting12-14. The project focused on reducing violent crime rates across America through education and public safety initiatives such as random background checks on all purchasers of guns15-17. However, since its inception, little progress has been made towards reducing firearm fatalities overall18-20 – despite calls from both political leaders21 and everyday Americans22 urging more action on this front. A variety of strategies have been put into place over time to try and improve gun safety13-16 – but none have had nearly the impact that effective universal background checks would have had on reducing firearm fatalities overall7-9 (see table below). * Name Year Comments Background Checks: A Solution? However, by 1900, the population had plummeted to just twelve people, most of whom were residents of nearby Dearborn Heights. In 1907, the township disbanded and Westland became an independent municipality with its own government. By 1912, however, it had shrunk again to a single house and two dozen residents. In 1915, when Detroit annexed all of Wayne County, Westland lost its municipalities status but retained its name as a part ofDearborn Heights. The last resident died in 1978 and the village ceased to exist after that year.
