The land that would become Westland was purchased by Captain John Butterfield and his family in 1838. They started to farm the land and in 1839, they built the first permanent home on their farm. The Butterfields continued to grow crops and raise livestock until 1861 when they decided to move to Lansing, Michigan. In 1893, Captain John Butterfield's grandson, George butterfield Jr., donated 5 acres of land near Lansing for a school district. In 1934, this property was renamed after Captain John Butterfield Sr.'s wife Anna Marie who had died earlier that year.
The town of Westland was created in 1892 when the township of Westland and the village of East Livingston were combined. The first settler in what is now Westland was John Matson who came to the area in 1851. In 1892, a post office was established in the town, which functioned until 1907. In 1922, the town became a part of Michigan's newly formed Ten Mile Township. The population grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to Detroit and its ability to produce munitions. Afterward, though, growth slowed as more people moved into other townships within Michigan. In 1994, Westland withdrew from Ten Mile Township and became an unincorporated community once again.
