In 1885, the first gun design in Westland was a Winchester rifle. The rifle was designed by George Peabody and Sons and it consisted of a stock, barrel and magazine. It was used for hunting game such as deer, turkey, rabbit and other small animals. In 1911, the Wolverine Rifle Company was founded in Westland by Hiram Maxim. This company specialized in making rifles that were both accurate and reliable. The Wolverine Rifle Company made guns that were used by the military as well as law enforcement officers. In 1937, the United States Military turned to Sturm Ruger for help with developing new firearms designs. Sturm Ruger developed the Beretta pistol which became one of the most popular handguns in the world. The first firearms in Westland were pistols. The first revolver was built by Samuel Colt in 1836. In 1837, rifle and shotgun companies were formed, and the first rifle company was formed on December 4, 1837. On January 1, 1840, the pistol company became a rifle company. In 1861-1865, the gun industry changed with the American Civil War. Gun manufacturers shifted to making rifles for Union military forces while leaving handguns behind because they had no need for such large caliber weapons on an open battlefield where small arms could easily be used as skirmishers or light infantry support units. On July 16, 1865, Grinold Arms Company merged into Winchester Repeating Arms Company effective November 15th of that year. This merger created one of America's largest handgun manufactories with plants located in Indianapolis (at New Haven), Dayton (in Macomb County), and Springfield Armory in Kentucky which produced over two million firearms between them from 1865 until 1899 when it closed its doors due to bankruptcy proceedings
Westland is a small city in the western United States. The population was 3,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Westland was organized on July 1, 1835 by General John C. Frémont and his brigade from the Michigan Territory. Westland was named for Captain John West who had come to Canada with Tecumseh in 1824 and had been one of the participants in the Battle of Buena Vista on October 16, 1825. One of Frémont's goals when he came to Michigan was to establish a military post here so that United States forces could be operating against Mexico more easily and effectively. He also wanted to provide a grazing area for American settlers who would then begin moving into what became Michigan Territory. "In early 1830, General Frémont established Fort Dearborn at Grand Rapids [now Detroit], which served as an important US military installation northwest of Mackinac Island." "In 1836 Congress passed an act authorizing Colonel Augustus Hodge (a prominent land speculator) to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) north-west of where present-day Westland stands." "Hodge began building what would become known as Old Westland on this tract; it opened up in 1840." "Hodge's development spawned many other businesses and dwellings throughout until 1898 when most were destroyed by fire." The first post office opened in 1836; it closed in 1861 because mail running through Fort Dearborn wasn't necessary anymore due to increased transportation options available eastward across Lake Huron." The first school opening here were two gradeschools operated by Reverend Wm Ewing between 1840-1845 before being replaced by Grades 7th-8thgrades operated by Revd Jno Atherton after that time." By 1850 about 350 residents lived here including 173 white people and 101 black people"; however, only 12% of total population back then reported as white since there weren't any official records kept track of such things ." In 1860 there were 389 residents living here including 269 white people and 123 black people;" however this percentage slowly decreased over time due largely to Outmigration among Michiganders during that period ." In 1898 when most buildings burned downdue mainlyto arsonthe population stood at just 507 individuals.""Today only traces remainof these early pioneers such as Hodge’s cabinand foundations for First National Bank which stand today adjacentto City Hall.""Despite its shrinking population, OldWestland has continued To playan important role within local community life," Its architecture – both historic and modern - has been admired worldwide . Although its attentions have waned over time (mainly because newer developments have taken over), some remnants like Hodge’s cabin still exist today providing tantalizing glimpses into what may have once been life inside an early settler’s home."

Westland, Michigan is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek area of Lower Michigan. The population was 4,922 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lansing-East Lansing metropolitan area. The community began as a farming village in 1855 on the east side of what is now Westland Township. A post office was established there in 1857, and by 1860, it had grown to include a school and several businesses. In 1870, John Sisson started an eighty acre (36 hectare) cooperative farm that became one of the largest in the area. By 1922, when it merged with other nearby villages to form East Lansing Township, Westland had become an agricultural hamlet with only a few homes remaining. In 1954, Westland became home to one of two air defence missile launch sites for U.S. Air Force missiles located in Michigan during the Cold War era; it continued to serve this purpose until 1998 when all launches were moved to Range 38 at Whiteman AFB near Stilwell Junction, Kansas. The community has distinction for its role as birthplace of both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton; many residents still maintain close ties to their childhood hometowns both through personal connections and political activism. Today's economy revolves around retail trade and health care services; however some traditional farming practices continue throughout the township including corniculture which uses maize plants growth stunting them so they can’t resist insects while they are producing ears/stalks
Westland was a small village in Michigan during the 1800s. It was located on the north side of Mackinac Island, and it became the largest settlement on the island after its founding. The village had about fifty residents at its peak.
