Westland is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan on the Upper Peninsula of Lake Huron. The population was 8,878 at the 2010 census, up from 7,585 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wolverine metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Westland was George Washburn who arrived in 1814. In 1834, John and Catherine Chappell bought land north of present-day Westland from David Hackett and began to build a house there which they named "Chappell House."hackett also built a small mill on the east side of present-day Michigan Street which he named "Hackett's Mill." In 1836, James Clough purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) northwest of town from David Hackett for $2,250 cash plus ten shares of stock in his new mill complex which included a sawmill and gristmill as well as dwellings for workers. Clough renamed his land "Clough Township" after himself and started to develop it into a village with stores, an academy and schoolhouse. One hundred years later it remains one of Michigan's oldest villages with over 100 residents still living there today! In 1856, Simon Cameron set out from London to visit American settlers along the Mackinac River watershed He reached Michilimackinac County by September 3rd but found no settlers willing to join him because he didn't have any goods or money to offer them! Cameron then continued downriver until he met men led by Solomon Grundy who agreed to join him on October 15th near what is now Disstonville – this initial group would become known as The Group! On November 5th they founded what would become Westland Township! Grundy had been born in Canada in 1785 and had come over during that year’s Fraser Rebellion where British forces were crushed under heavy American military pressure; he decided then that America must be saved so he came ashore here with his men to start a new life – this event would forever change westward migration!!! From these early days until about 1870 when white settlement ceased due primarily to Indian raids (See: History Of White Settlement In Western Michigan), most people lived along either the Mackinac or Detroit Riversides……………………………………………………………..
