The settlement grew rapidly due to its strategic location at one end of Muskegon Bay and its easy access to shipping lanes on Lake Superior which allowed for its rapid growth during both early development and later years as an industrial center during America'spost-revolutionary era boom period following World War II stagnation period caused by changing technology and labor shortages brought on by wartime production overseas
