Westland, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 33,569 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th-largest city in Michigan and the largest city inOakland County by population. Westland is also one of two cities in Wayne County (the other being Dearborn) that are each home to more than 100,000 residents as well as three municipalities: villages of Albion, Buchanon and East Lansing. The economy of Westland is based on manufacturing and services. The first permanent settler in what would become Westland was John Lewis who came to the area in 1836 with his family from Ohio. In 1837 he built a cabin on the banks of Muskegon River near present day downtown Westland after finding land for sale on both sides of the river. He named his new community "Lewisburg" after himself and his father-in-law, Lewis Gantt (1796–1862). By 1840 there were over 20 buildings in Lewisburg including a sawmill, gristmill and flour mill which produced wheat flour for local markets as well as exported to Detroit for refining into bread crumbs; hops for beer; tea; coffee; candles; wagon tires etc.. In 1854 Western State Normal School opened its doors ≡ an educational institution which would grow into Wayne State University ≡_. In 1857 Lewisburgh voters passed a resolution recognizing Detroit's growing importance within Michigan due to its industry and commerce opportunities offered by Woodward Avenue east of Mackinac Bridge. This led to construction of a road east from downtownDetroit through what is now downtownWestland then north along Mackinac Avenue past Bristol Township before turning west again at US 74 just south of today's village boundaries forming part of today's town limits with Detroit Heights neighborhood much earlier still under Indian settlement according to some sources however other sources claim this road actually began at modern day White Marsh Road where Ford originally built carriages used by mail carriers back when roads were still dirt

Westland is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Muskegon River and is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon-Kalamazoo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Westland was James Kittley in 1837. Kittley and his family moved from Connecticut to start a farm hereabouts. In 1851, John Stephenson settled here with his wife and six children. Stephenson became one of the early settlers of this area which included present day Westland and parts of neighboring townships such as Arlington and Mayfield. By 1860 there were 106 people living in Westland Township with 3 churches, 3 stores, 2 mills, 1 blacksmith shop and 1 schoolhouse all operated by subscription or faculty/staff only. In 1871 a post office was established at Westland under the name of Kalamazoo; it remained in operation until 1938 when it was changed to Muskegon Heights.. In 1907 (the same year as the village's incorporation) Wm Henson opened what is today called "Henson's Bakery", one of several early businesses that thrived in what would become Westland during its history; Henson also served as village clerk for many years prior to his death in 1957. The village had an assessed valuation of $2,797 at the 2000 census but declined to $1,690 by2010 due largely to declines in real estate values throughout Muskegon County over that period; however future plans for developing land within theVillage have seemed to revive some life into Village property assessment values since then...
The first permanent settler in what is now Westland was John F. Potter who arrived around 1836. Potter built a log cabin on the current site of Grand Rapids, Michigan in what is now the city of Westland. The first school in the area was created by Reverend James Wigglesworth and his students in 1837. By 1840, there were three churches located in Westland: one for Baptists, one for Presbyterians, and one for Methodists. In 1847, American Civil War veteran General Ulysses S. Grant moved from Indiana to Battle Creek and began to farm land that would become known as Grant Park. In 1861, when Michigan joined the Union during the American Civil War, Westland became part of Battle Creek Township which also included present-day Dearborn Heights and other townships in southeastern Michigan. During World War II, Westland served as an airfield where various military units operated from here including the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force (1944-1945), United States Navy Patrol Squadron 1 (1946-1948), and United States Marine Corps Aircraft Guard Unit 2 (1949-1950). In 1951-1952,Westland was home to North America's first television station when KQED aired channel 3 from a transmitter atop Mount Pleasant hill across from town hall. The original building still stands today - it is currently used as office space by Western Michigan University - but its antenna has been relocated to nearby Kalamazoo since then! Today, much of what once constituted rural East Lansing has disappeared into downtown Detroit with only a few scattered farms remaining; while some portions of the western end of town have experienced suburban growth due to new development over the past several decades or so. However, much of what once comprised centralwest side of town remains largely undeveloped parklands filled with lakes and forests with homes existing on small parcels only near their water features such as Lakes Huron & Superior which provide both recreational opportunities as well as raw agricultural land ideal for growing crops such as corn or soybeans
