Westland is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 24,912 at the 2010 census, making Westland one of the fastest-growing cities in Michigan. Hudon continued to be used as a village until 1836 when it became part of Detroit Township under control of Governor John Pemberton. In 1837, Detroit Township was divided into two parts – one under control of Governor Pemberton, including Hudon Township; and another controlled by General Nathan Bedford Forrest with responsibility for Westland County, which included all but portions of Dearborn County east of Lake St Clair ( bounded by present day Detroit on the north; Grand Traverse County on the south; Saginaw County on the east; and Oakland County on the west). Of particular interest are three pieces of property - land that became known as Forest Park due to its natural resources such as oak trees and maple trees grown thereabouts - that were transferred from Fort Gratiot to East Lansing Municipal Airport in 1949 following its acquisition by Air America Airlines as part of their MUA bankruptcy restructuring. Detroit Township residents voted 3-2 in May 1938 to incorporate as a city with Westland being given back jurisdiction over its own affairs once again within Wayne County pursuant to section 9(b) of article XI (urban areas) OF THE MICHIGAN CONSTITUTION OF 1934 (). Westland was first settled by the Potawatomi in 1795. The area became part of the Michigan Territory in 1801, and was organized as a township in 1824. Westland was named for General Daniel Westbrook, who fought in the War of 1812. In 1846, the township changed its name to Eastland and lost its connection with Detroit. In 1897, it became a Village within the City of Detroit.
