In 1886, Westland was founded as a township in Ingham County. The township was named for the Spanish word "west" (hora), which means "noon." By 1892, it had a population of just under 300 people. The first school in Westland operated from 1892 to 1896. In 1897, the first post office opened in Westland. By 1912, the township had a population of 479 people and two businesses: a grocery store and a bakery. During World War II, many soldiers from Westland served in the armed forces. One soldier from Westland who served in the war is now recognized with an award by the United States government. In 1951, Westland became part of Lansing Township when that town was merged into Lansing Municipal District #1. By 1969, East Lansing had become the largest municipality in Michigan andWestland's boundaries were reduced to what are today known as Roosevelt Boulevard on the east side of Mackinac Island and 10th Street on the west side of Mackinac Island proper.

In 1898, it became a city. The population of Westland peaked at over 100,000 in 1960, but then declined to around 60,000 by 1980. Since then, the population has slowly declining until it reached its current level of around 40,000 people.
