Westland, Michigan is a small town located in the Kalamazoo-Portage County area of Michigan. The population was 2,021 at the 2000 census. Westland was founded in 1855 by settlers from Erie, New York. The town became a village in 1903 and a city in 1957. It is now an incorporated municipality with a population of approximately 60,000 people. The economy of Westland is based on agriculture and manufacturing. The primary industry is agricultural production, which includes raising chickens, pigs, beef cattle and other livestock; spinning fiber into fabric; and producing tannery products. Manufacturing includes the manufacture of consumer goods such as cars and appliances; printing presses; paper products; transportation equipment; construction materials; and fireworks supplies. Westland has several cultural attractions including the John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, which were opened in 1996; the Parade Grounds Park located near downtown; the Old Western Store building dating back to 1892 which is home to one of west Michigan's oldest bars); the Westland Community Church located across from City Hall on State Highway 11 (); and Mount Pleasant Cemetery which contains graves dating back to 1836.

In 1851, the town charter was amended to allow for a school district. The town also saw growth in agriculture due to its proximity to fields and forests. By 1865, Westland had a population of 1,500 people. However, by 1870, Westland's economy had collapsed due to factors such as overpopulation and poor farming practices. The town lost most of its population during this time and stopped growing altogether. Today, only a few buildings remain from when Westland was an important community with a strong economy that contributed significantly to Michigan's history.
Westland was first settled by the Potawatomi in the early 1800s. The area became a part of Michigan in 1837, and became a township in 1851. Westland was named for General James West, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The community developed into a small farming community with several distinct businesses and schools. In 1916, the town merged with neighboring Ignace to form one new city.
