The history of Westland, Michigan begins with the first white people to set foot on the land that now includes the city of Westland. The area was first occupied by the Hurons, and during their time,Westland was a part of their village. In 1836, Captain Lewis Cassa landed at what is now called Point Defiance Bay on what is now known as Western Michigan University’s campus. Cassa was looking for a new home for his family after his previous home in Illinois failed to meet his expectations. After landing in what is today Westland,Captain Cassa started exploring this new land and discovered an area that would soon be renamed Michigan because it had been donated by John George Harrison, who then became the Governor of Michigan Territory. In 1837, Colonel Abraham Lincoln appointed Major General George Washington Stephenson as Superintendent of Indian Affairs in connection with surveys made to determine whether or not there were any suitable sites for white settlements in this newly acquired territory. When Stephenson learned about Captain Cassa’s discovery he wanted to try and get some settlers here so he set out with a group of men on horseback from Detroit on July 12th,1837. After making it all the way upriver they decided that they should wait until morning before starting out again because there were too many trees downpour and snakes around them while riding through mudholes; however when night fell they managed to make it all the way across without getting wet thanks to a small stream that crossed over their path at high water mark; still it required more than one day due to weather conditions which included lightening storms and lightning going through trees as well as towering mountains in front of them creating dangerous cliffsides! When Stephenson arrived at what is today Westland he found only traces of human activity including bones and tools left behind by early inhabitants such as the Hurons who had long ago fled westward into Canada. The first settler in what would become Westland was James Fenton who built a cabin near present day Harbor Springs on October 25th,1838.Fenton named his settlement “Hagadon” after one of his horses which he won at a racecourse near Detroit. Two years later another pioneer named Daniel Haggerty moved into Hagadon and started farming but sadly died within two years due to yellow fever epidemic which swept across much of North America at this time also causing great losses among traders traveling through these regions carrying goods back and forth between different parts of North America. It wasn’t until 1843 when General John Custer led an army eastward from Fort Recovery (now Chicago) against Native Americans known as the Ojibwe tribe during battle near present-day Sault Ste Marie; however despite being very successful against these Indians Custer lost most members including himself along with most if not all assets taken during this engagement which resulted in immense financial hardship for both him and his army commanders Gouverneur Morrissey (the military governor for Upper Canada)and Winfield Scott Hancock (the military governor for Lower Canada). This event also helped spur economic development within Jackson Township where Steeleville remains located today thanks largely to its location next to where Custer fought while supplies were running low; furthermore nearby Waterford became an important market town because Fenton could ship goods directly from Hagadon downriver without having to go through other markets like Greenville or Grand Rapids
