The history of Westland, Michigan begins with the early settling of the area in 1836. The town was named after Fort Detroit, which was destroyed by the Indian War in 1805. After a few years of growth, the population of Westland grew to over 100 people by 1840. By 1851, there were more than 1,000 residents in Westland and it had become a small agricultural community. In 1865, local residents voted to incorporate as a village. This decision helped make Westland one of the most rapidly growing villages in Michigan during the late 19th century. In 1898, the village passed an ordinance establishing water meters and providing services such as trash collection and fire protection. In 1906, Westland became part of Mackinac County when it was organized from parts of Huron and Kalamazoo counties. During World War I, much effort was put into developing munitions factories in nearby Battle Creek and Grand Rapids; however, due to economic restrictions on war production within Michigan, only a limited number of munitions were produced inWestland. After World War II ended, many jobs left East Lansing for new opportunities in California and other states; however, some businesses continued to operate inWestland until around 1970. During this time period there were also several changes at the top leadership level withinthe village: first came Mayor Eugene Rolph (1930-1970), who served for nearly 30 years; then came his successor George Fenton (1970-2000); and lastly came Mayor David Duchovny (2000-present).
Westland is a small town in the Kalamazoo metropolitan area of Michigan. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Census Area. The first settler in what is now Westland was John Pemberton, who arrived in 1795. He and his family built a cabin on a hill overlooking the town site. Pemberton donated land to make way for the present-day community and named it after himself, Westland Manor. According to one account, when Pemberton died in 1801 his wife took over management of Westland and continue to name all of its streets after him until her death in 1868. In 1837, James Waddell came to Westland from Tuscarawas County and started an agricultural business that would become one of the most successful entities within the community. Waddell became known as "the father of Westland." Over time, Waddell's interests shifted from agriculture to manufacturing and he founded various companies including Eastman Kodak Company and Detroit Carriage Works (now Ford Motor Company). In 1916, he sold his business interest in Westland to George Houghlin for $1 million dollars which formed the nucleus of Houghlin Copper & Manufacturing Company (later Agrium Inc.). Although it has been shrinking since World War II due largely to competition from other industrial areas throughout Michigan, Westland still retains some unique features such as its independent school system with its own superintendent, post office/ mail service, fire department and jail; as well as its three miles long main street which runs perpendicular to Woodward Avenue nears downtown Muskegon Heights
