In 1837, Isaac Nissen bought land from Aiken and built a gristmill on Rapids River near present-day Gratiot Avenue and I-475W (now Woodward Avenue), becoming one of the first farmers to grow crops hereabouts; he also erected a log cabin used as a storeroom and living quarters for himself and his family.
