In 2007, Westland approved annexation of nearby Livonia to form a new city with a population of over 100,000 people. Westland has four schools: Westland Jr./Sr., Livonia Jr./Sr., East Lansing Jr./Sr., and Northwood High School which serves students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. The community also has two churches: First Baptist Church and Christ United Methodist Church which serve as both community centers and religious services for residents. There are several businesses including three banks, two grocery stores, two hardware stores, four restaurants/bars, one home improvement store/rental company, two parks - one near downtown and one just outside of town - as well as several dozen residences scattered throughout the rural area around town center while several dozen more are housed within what had been Detroit's eastern suburbs until they were included in Livonia's2010 annexation referendum According to the 2010 U.S. Census report,[1] there were 2,711 people living in Westland according to household size count alone; 1% under 5 years old and 0% who were 5–9 years old; 3% who were 10–14 years old; 7% who were 15–19 years old; 11% who were 20–24 years old; 6% who were 25 or older; 1% who were 60 or older.[2] According to the 2000 U . S . Census report,[3] there was 1,757 people living in Westland according to household size count alone; 3% under 5 years old and 0% who were 5–9 years old; 4% who were 10–14 years old; 9% who were 15–19 year olds; 12%. There was also 8%, or 231 persons age 65 or over lived[4]; this number increased by 9 percentage points (from 251 persons age 65 or over) due primarily to increases among those 50+ (from 16%, now 24%)."[5] With an estimated population growth rate averaging 2%;[6][7][8][9] by 2020[10], we can expect that number still ticking upward at about +3%.
