The city of Wayne, Michigan is a town of about 23,000 people located in the western Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was estimated at 24,638 as of the 2010 census. Wayne is one of four towns in Washtenaw County and the only one without a municipal service area. It is also the only community in Washtenaw County without an airport or any other forms of air travel. The only way to reach it from neighboring Lansing or Detroit is by automobile or bus. The city developed on land that was originally part of the Muskegon Heights Reserve. In 1836, George Stephenson built a wooden mill here and named it for his friend and investor James Kappworth Sr., who had bought some land in the area two years earlier. In 1868, David Dixon founded what became Gratiot Paper Company which operated until 1984 when it merged with Dow Chemical Co. One reason for this lack of commercial activity may be its location on rural property which could not easily be irrigated due to poor ground water availability. Other factors include poor transportation infrastructure and high costs associated with building roads and bridges necessary to get into town from surrounding villages or farms

Today, several buildings still stand in downtown Wayne including Hildebrandt's Store #2 (now known as Griggs Pharmacy), Kappe's Millinery Shop #1 (now known as Myer ), First National Bank building #1 (now known as Ford-Mansfield Center), First National Bank building #2 (now called University Avenue United Methodist Church), Masonic Temple building #1 (now known as Third Ward Hall), and Mrs. Copley House (former home of Dr.. Copley). The early years were difficult for Wayne because it competed against other small towns for business opportunities and tax dollars from Lansing County government officials. However, over time, residents began to build up their own economy based on agriculture, manufacturing, service businesses, and tourism products from nearby Detroit or Ann Arbor industries such as automobiles and printing presses. The first settler in Wayne was James Doig and his family. The town became a major transportation hub due to its location on the river and its access to trade with other parts of the United States. In 1837, the Territorial Legislature renamed Wayne County after General David Dyer, one of the leaders of the American Revolution.
