John married Ann and had two children, James and Ellen. Henry married a woman named Sarah and had four children: Lucy, Amanda, Stephen, and Franklin. Anna married a man named Slocum and had one child: Eva. The Slocum family also lived in Wayne for a time before moving away again. The Holland family was part of the large group that migrated from Pennsylvania to Michigan during the 1830s. Many of these new arrivals were farmers who left their homes behind to start anew in what is now Michigan Territory. When Congress chartered Michigan as a state on November 16, 1837, most of these settlers already knew Wayne because it was one of the original thirteen communities included in the territory. The Holland family quickly established themselves in Wayne thanks to their good relationships with other local families. In addition to their own home on Elm Street (now called Third Avenue), they also built several additions to their property over time including a barn (1840), an oven (1846), a blacksmith shop (1850), and more! John also served as mayor of Wayne from 1840-1849; his political skills likely helped him manage this busy town well. By 1860, Anna's death left John as sole proprietor of his businesses- he continued running them until his death in 1875 at age 80 years old.* In addition to his businesses*John served as president of the Wayne Board of Education from 1861- 1865; he was instrumental in creating public schools throughout much of Midwestern America during this time period.* He is also buried at Holy Cross Cemetery located just east of downtown *In spite of all this activity*, it's difficult notto feel like little happened during John's lifetime- both within *and* outside *the Municipal limits*. However, there are many notable individuals associated withJohn such as his son James who became Mayoralty candidate for Detroit City Council twice between 1893-1912; father HenrySlocum who founded Cadillac; Helen DeVos whose husband George Mays donated land for voter education drives aroundtown beginningin 1915; Drusilla Beamon Moorefounderof Ball State Universityin 1947; former Congressman Gerald Ford who attended St Joseph's School when he was five years old* And finally* many others whom we'll never be able to name due to their memory being too long forgotten or too lost amongst all those otherstadtians known& esteemed today
Wayne was founded in 1837 by the brothers Wayne and John Stonington. The town originally grew up around a fur trading post, but soon developed into a major center for agricultural production. In the 1860s, Wayne became an important stop on the Underground Railroad as many escaped slaves sought refuge in the area. In 1881, the opening of the Saginaw Bay Bridge made Wayne an important link between Michigan and Canada. The city continued to grow during the late 19th century and into the 20th century, with large-scale development including a steel plant in 1912 and a munitions factory in 1930.
