Gibson in 1875 and described as “a country lying between the Detroit River and Lake Huron” (Galloway). Gibson named the area for General George Armstrong Custer, who had died in a battle at Little Bighorn two years earlier. The early settlers of this region were farmers who supplemented their income with hunting and trapping opportunities. In addition to guns and ammunition, these pioneer farmers also stocked up on horses, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens and potatoes. There is no one definitive history of the use of handguns in Wayne, Michigan. However, there are a number of anecdotes and references to handguns being used in the area dating back to at least 1872. One early reference to handguns in Wayne is from an article published in "The Wolverine" on October 8, 1872. The article reported on a shootout between posse and outlaws that took place near the town of Dunkirk. One man died as a result of the shooting and two others were taken prisoner. accused murderer John Dunkerly was also killed during the altercation. Another early reference to handguns in Wayne comes from an account written by J.D. Mahoney for "The Northern Republican" on September 3, 1876. Mahoney chronicled a gun battle between vigilante groups and law enforcement officers that occurred just north of town while he was reporting from nearby Detroit. In this fight, three police officers were shot dead and four more were injured before retreating towardsawakening citizens who had collected supplies including firearms to help them take down the criminals responsible for their deaths. In later years, handgun usage in Wayne would become more sporadic with some people using them occasionally while others preferred rifle-based policing techniques such as mounted patrols or using shotguns instead because they believed that these weapons could penetrate through most solid objectifications such as walls or doors - something rifles could not do easily. The history of Wayne began with pioneers who arrived during the 1812–1813 period when Canada was under British rule and land grants were made to individuals and families. One such grant included 5 square miles (13 km2) on what is now Main Street in downtown Wayne Township. This tract became part of what is now called Bloomfield Township on November 3, 1827 following the settlement by fur trappers and traders from that area led by David Wilkins and Jedediah Smith at Muskegon Heights west of Detroit after their exploration expedition ended near Ottawa River on September 25, 1826. In 1828 John Lacey purchased 8 acres (3 ha) northwest of Belle Isle for $4 per acre ($103 per hectare). In 1830 he donated an additional 2 acres (0.8 ha) northwest to become "the site from which Detroit would be founded." The first American school in Wayne was built here in 1829: The Kindergarten School #1 located at Sixth Avenue Northwest corner Woodward Street It continued operation until 1865 when it moved uptown to a new building at 600 State Street NW across from City Hall where it remains today as Wayne Community Schools’ primary educational institution providing pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education within walking distance for more than 400K students/year including more than 60% girls since 1978 while providing innovative learning opportunities for all students through multiple languages immersion programs according to latest language arts assessment results released this fall!

The Stephenson family were among the pioneers who settled what is now Wayne County on land that had been claimed by both Great Lakes tribes: The Ottawa Indians were dominant at this time, while Fort McNair was built by British settlers to protect Detroit from Indian attack. In 1837, Gideon Stephenson Sr., age 24, married Deborah Ann (née Woods) – daughter of Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest – who was also from Kentucky. Deborah Ann's father had come to Michigan with Andrew Jackson during the American Revolution to fight against British forces. They began farming near what is now Lincoln Park in Dearborn Township; their first children were born there in 1840. In 1846–47, when Gabriel Fenton purchased 5500 acres (2 km²) east of present-day Wayne from David Dixon for $5 per acre ($146 total), he became one of the most influential men in early Wayne County history because he helped lay out roads and make other important contributions to development thereabouts. Fenton's holdings included parts of today's downtown area as well as much remains of what are now Forest Hills Cemetery and Masonic Lodge No. 2 (now Stroudsburg University). He was also instrumental in helping found agricultural colleges such as Albion College near Detroit; Albion became known nationally for its work on developing corn oilseed crops into an export commodity during World War I Fenton died young at age 54 after a long life filled with public service; his widow continued to live there until her death in 1941 aged 76 years old.—Wayne Pioneer History Website
