Wayne is a small town in the southeastern corner of Michigan, just east of Lansing. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midland-Otsego County School District. The town was first settled in 1824 by George Hull and his family, who named it after Captain Wayne (1786-1860), a British general who had fought in the War of 1812 and then served as US Minister to Russia. The Hulls were joined by other pioneers including Isaac Warner and John Palfrey in 1830. The early settlers were farmers who raised hay and corn for their own consumption and for export to other parts of Michigan. In 1850, Wayne became a dry goods store on Main Street which soon became an important center for local commerce. In 1861, when US President Abraham Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation, Wayne's residents voted to secede from Michigan and form their own state called "Kentucky" (later renamed "Indiana"). However, Indiana's secession was thwarted by federal troops under General Ulysses S Grant and the town reverted back to Michigan control two years later. In 1872, when Michigan legalized prostitution with passage of its first brothel law, Wayne took advantage of the opportunity; its prostitutes numbered more than 100 at their peak. By 1910 there were only six women living in the town—two working as night shift workers at a hotel adjacent to the post office while four others ran an agricultural cooperative near downtown that supplied vegetables to local restaurants. The mining industry dominated Wayne during most of its history although manufacturing also played an important role beginning with shoe production through 1915 when A & W Shoes relocated from Battle Creek to open a new plant on Woodward Avenue employing 1,500 people making shoespun corduroys for stores all over America before being bought out by Dickies in 1978; however heavy industry left behind little evidence except for some abandoned mines that can still be seen today along Woodward Ave., once home to about 160 employees surplusing Produce Mart into smaller buildings across three widths until demolition began almost fifty years ago today!
