Warren is a small town in the extreme northwest corner of Michigan, about midway between Detroit and Lansing. The population was 9,716 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for Warren Hastings, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the Board of Trade in London. Hastings also served as a trustee of the University of Michigan from 1789 to 1792; he was one of its first presidents. The post office at Warren was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it closed on September 15, 1903. In 1834, Congress passed a bill creating what is now Wayne County; Warren was included within it (under construction at that time) along with other towns located east of Grand Rapids. In 1837, another act created Oakland County; Warren formed part thereof immediately (along with other villages located west of Flint). In 1840 – when both Wayne and Oakland Counties were divided into half – Warren became an exclusive township within Shiawassee Township which had been organized fewer years earlier but which lay south-west (and consequently north-west)of Shiawassee Township’s eastern boundary line. Warren has always been heavily agricultural: nearly all its residents engaged in some form agriculture or related trade during most periods since its founding. Dairy farming continued to be a majorstay well into the 21st century; however, many businesses have closed down due to changes in the local economy or competition from larger cities nearby. As late as 2000, there existed only two grocery stores—one open year-round and one seasonal—and no6 restaurants or bars either; today there are five such establishments as well as several small businesses.[1] However, despite these challenges, "the business climate has definitely warmed over recent years" according to owner Matt Slatkin,[2] makingWarren one of the fastest-growing communities in Muskegon Heights proper while still remaining affordable for families looking for quality food options without sacrificing access to save money.[3]
Warren was founded in 1837 by Theophilus Warren and his wife Sarah. It was the first village in Michigan and is still a functioning community today.
