Warren is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 15,994 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Warren was James Wetherall and his wife Sarah Whitcomb on July 1, 1814. The town was platted on September 9, 1824 by commissioners of Wayne County territorial government under the name "Warren". It served as the county seat from December 12, 1827 to March 3, 1830. The county courthouse moved to Detroit in 1833 and housed the courtrooms until it burned down in 1906. In 1850, General George Armstrong Custer was born in Warren. He later became an American general and won fame during World War I for his actions near Ypres (Verdun). In 1924, he donated land for the University of Michigan football stadium which bears his name. A post office called Custerville was established in October 1886; it closed February 28, 1957. The first store in Warren opened on Main Street on November 6th of that year. The Grocery Store & Creamery operated there until it closed around 1915 due to a lack of customers with the war coming along then also because of Prohibition being passed that same year which made buying alcohol illegal so businesses had to close their doors too which caused them to sell food instead like they used to do back then before prohibition started
