Walker was first settled in 1824 by John Walker and his family who named their land "Walker's Ford". The community was laid out in 1829 by Ebenezer Post and others on land bought from Fort Gratiot proprietor Isaac Stevens. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,429 people residing in Walker. The population density was 756.7 people per square mile (293.2/km²). There were 1,812 housing units at an average density of 309.6 per square mile (118.5/km²). The racial makeup of Walker was 97% White, 2% African American, 0% Native American, 0% Asian, 0% Pacific Islander, and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2%.
