Walker was founded in 1871 by John Walker and his family. The town is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the border of Wayne and Oakland counties. It is a small community with a population of approximately 1,500 residents. Walker is known for its apple orchards, which are among the largest in the United States. John Walker was a real estate agent who started selling land in Walker in 1864. He donated some of his land to the town when it was founded. The first post office was opened in 1865. In 1870, JohnWalker died and his wife inherited his land and property within Walker. They continued to own it until their death in 1912. The town's first school was built in 1872 by Mr. Copley, who gave money for it from his profits as an auctioneer. In 1888, Mrs. Ladd donated land for another school building that still stands today inside the town limits near Highway FFW (now Woodward Avenue). The township received its current name from James Kapp, who bought 2 lots within walking distance of where he lived east of present-day downtownWalker in 1868 while exploring what would become metropolitan Detroit area at that time; Kapp called the area "Walker Township" after himself and decided not to rename it as "Detroit Township" as he liked because he thought people living there would confuse him with William Harkness (the namesake of Detroit)). In 1908, local farmers erected a large wooden blocksdam across White River just west of present-day downtownWalker to help improve irrigation techniques used on nearby farms during a severe drought year; this dam remains one of only two remaining examples left standing on White River west of downtownWalker today! ceased operations effective date unknown

Walker was a small town in the Michigan Territory, located on the east bank of the Missisquoi River. The first settler in Walker was James Walker, who arrived in 1813. In 1824, the United States acquired what is now Michigan from Great Britain. Walker became part of the new U.S. state of Michigan and was renamed to Walker Township in 1830. The first post office at Walker was established in 1835, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1898. Walker had a population of only 100 residents when it lost its charter as an incorporated township on November 15, 1847, due to lack of support from local merchants and citizens. It regained its charter on December 6, 1850; but for two years (1852-1854) it did not have any municipal government because it functioned as a census-designated place (CDP). In 1860, however, after becoming an unincorporated village again under Village Act § 7(a), Walker re-establishing itself as a municipality with full powers from then until 1967 when it became an unincorporated area within Wayne County again following passage of the Unincorporated Area Property Tax ordinance No. 11-269 The original settlers were James Klinecker and his family who arrived about 1796; John Prentice and his family who came about 1800; Isaac Pencey and his family who came around 1802; Cornelius Poston’s family came about 1807 It is believed that other families also may have come early hereabouts such as: Harker brothers or Nevin’s party which landed near this spot on July 8th/9th 1794 Today there are only a few remaining descendants left of these pioneer families scattered throughout all corners of northeast Michigan including Livingston County can be found living among us . . .
