Walker is a city in the far northeast corner of Michigan, just north of the Canadian border. It is one of four municipalities in Macomb County and was incorporated as a town on November 1, 1871. The population was 17,989 at the 2010 census. The area that would become Walker was first settled by farmers in the early 1800s. In 1868, John Fitch built a log cabin here and started logging in what would become Walker Township. By 1870, there were five homes and two stores in Walker Township. When Walker Township was organized on November 1, 1871, it consisted of only 10 residents. Two years later, it had grown to 25 people with three businesses: one store with $5 worth of goods per week and two homes for $10 each. In 1875, James Meeks opened the first hotel in Walker—the "Walker Hotel"—and other small businesses followed suit over the next few years. By 1886, there were 12 businesses operating inWalker including six hotels and three dry-goods stores. In 1898, Abram Bearden opened his bakery which became known as "The Bearden Bakery". The bakery closed its doors for good around 1915 but continued to be stored away until 1978 when it reopened under new ownership as "Abram's Bakery". It is now part of Tim Hortons Corporation headquartered in Toronto Canada

Walker is a small town in Shiawassee County, Michigan. It was founded in 1837 by John Walker and his wife Jane. The name of the town comes from the James Walker family farmstead on the northwest side of the village. As of 2010, Walker had a population of 1,118. Walker was originally part of the Grand Rapids Township. On July 1, 1871, it became part of Shiawassee County. In 1906, it was renamed to Walker after John F. Walker, Jr., who served as sheriff from 1903 to 1907 and mayor from 1909 to 1913. In 1938, it was merged into nearby Holland Township. The town has two schools: The First Baptist Church School serving grades K-8 and Roosevelt Elementary School serving grades 9-12; both are coeducational with full funding from the township government for each school district (the only such arrangement in Shiawassee County). The first school building was built in 1836 and replaced an earlier frame structure that burned down in 1865; it is now used as a community center.
Walker was founded in 1836 by John C. Walker and his brother Solomon. The town was named for General George Rogers Clark, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. senator from Kentucky. In 1841, the Walker brothers bought of land east of the Mackinac Bridge and started a log cabin industry. By 1850, Walker had a population of 100 people. The town developed into an agricultural center with outbuildings used for storage, trade, and local milling operations until it lost its significance after the closure of the Mackinac Bridge in 1857.
