Walker was founded in 1836 by John Walker and his wife Rebecca. In 1863, it became a post office under the name of Gratiot. In 1868, it became a city and was renamed Walker after John Walker's grandson, also named John Walker. The current name comes from George Washington Carver's definition of "Walker" as "a man who goes out to get things." The city is located on M-15 just east of Lansing and north of Battle Creek. It borders Lapeer Township to the northwest, Washtenaw Township to the northeast, Wayne County to the east and south, and Oakland County to the west. The downtown area is about two blocks wide with five blocks long between buildings facing onto Main Street. Walker has a public library which opened in 1906 and has been renovated several times since then including in 1978 when it received $10 million in federal stimulus money which made it one of only 25 libraries across America to be renovated using that funding source.
