Walker was founded on December 12, 1837 by John A. Walker and his wife Nancy. The first post office in Walker was established on January 3, 1838. Walker is named after George Rogers Clark who fought in the War of 1812 and then served as United States Senator from Kentucky from 1813 to 1821. George Rogers Clark laid out this town on land that he had purchased from the French in 1796. The first settler in Walker was James Fenton who arrived in 1799 and built a cabin near what is now downtownWalker. In 1830, Alfred Haines moved to Walker from Red Wing, Minnesota and started a millinery business which became one of the largest businesses in town until it closed around 1910 when World War I destroyed many mills across America. In 1840, Daniel Boone moved to Walker with his family and started a sawmill which remains operational today beside Main Street. In 1850, John Prentice joined forces with David Dixon to start a grocery store next door to their mill which became one of the most successful stores ever operated in village history In 1865–66 Lucius Noyes donated land north of Main Street for use as an agricultural college teaching classes such asagriculture and mechanics until it closed down around 1940 due to lack of students or money Two years later Stafford College opened up shop on North Main Street adjacent to Prentice's grocery store providing instruction both English and industrial arts courses until it closed down too also due to lack of students or money The post office servedWalker from January 3, 1838 until October 10th 1938 when it merged into the larger Macomb County Post Office . At that time 2 other towns within Macomb County were also combined into one large Post Office - Bay City (now part of Detroit) and Warren - forming what is still known today as "Macomb Township". When Macomb Township was organized form 1908-1966 all its residents including those living within Walker were automatically transferred into it so there is no real distinction betweenWalker & Bay City/Warren during that time frame...
