Walker was a small town in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, located on the right bank of the Kawkawa River. The community had been founded by Revolutionary War veterans in 1796, and its name is derived from one of their former unit's names, Walker's Ford. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn and potatoes for local markets. By 1812, Walker had a tannery and two stores. A post office was established in 1824, and by 1830 it had 30 residents. In 1838, Walker became the county seat of Jackson County; it remained so until 1861 when it was moved to Battle Creek. In 1840, George Cushing erected a sawmill at Walker; it continued in operation until 1862. The mill built a large frame house for its owners which still stands today (now known as the Cushing House Museum). In 1865, Walker was made an incorporated village under Decatur Township control; it remained an unincorporated community until 1945 when it became part of Battle Creek again.
Walker was founded by George Walker in 1836. It became a town in 1847, and was named for General John Walker. The first post office was established in Walker in 1848. In 1871, the towns of Decatur and Northville were merged into Walker.
