Troy, Michigan is a small town in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights School District. Troy is located on M-14 about 25 miles (40 km) east of Muskegon Heights and 40 miles (64 km) south of Detroit. The first settlers in what is now Troy were George Whitehead and his family who came to this area from Ohio in 1824. They cleared land and built a cabin here around 1830 or 1831. William Goodyear moved to Troy in 1837 and started an unsuccessful leather business here. In 1840, he erected the first store building here which still stands today known as the Goodyear Store Building on Main Street. The first post office was established at Troy in 1846 under the name of Clayville. In 1861, General James Haggerty arrived with his Union army during the American Civil War and destroyed much of downtown Troy while engaged in battle against Confederate forces near present day Central High School which then stood across from where Interstate 94 now intersects US-11 north of town. A commemorative marker for Haggerty can be found on State Road 11 just east of town off exit No. 2A/M-14; it also includes a brief description: "Hagertown Battlefield National Monument". Today’s downtown Troy was laid out primarily asresidential areas began expanding into rural areas northward beginning with construction by developer Harry Weisbard starting in 1954 following referendum vote by residents authorizing that type development within limits set forth by Town Council ordinance passed two years earlier." The commercial district surrounding City Hall grew rapidly after World War II as more people settled into rural towns seeking access to better schools, jobs, services, etc., More than 50 businesses are listed on the city's current economic development zone map developed by Mayor Steve Sadler's office Downtown Development Authority since 1991.; many remain open today including several large employers such as Ford Motor Company once located adjacent to I-94 but moved out when highway construction began upstream; other significant employers include First Data Corporation (now IBM), Chrysler Automobiles LLC, AIB Financial Inc., Belle Tire USA Inc., UPS - United Parcel Service - FedEx - US Airways - Air cargo transport giant DHL - among others
