Gun targets have been a part of Troy, Michigan for over 100 years. The first target was made by Alex Young in 1881. It was a three-foot-tall redwood tree that could be easily hit with a gun. Riflemen would take aim at the tree and shoot at any moving objects within its range. The second target was created in 1907 by George E. Dunham, who also designed and built the first shotgun firing range in the area. The target consisted of two circles that were 12 feet wide and 5 feet deep each. Targets were used to practice shooting and to improve one's accuracy when using guns. In 1954, John Hultquist began making rifle targets out of cast iron instead of wood because it allowed for more consistent shrinkage at the receiving end of the shot. In 1957, Troy established its own Shooting Range Commission which responsible for setting up and maintaining shooting ranges in the city limits. A few years later, they decided to create an actual course around their tree on Union Street called "The Green". This course allowed people from all over town to come use it as their personal training ground while also teaching them how to shoot handguns, shotguns, rifles and even paintball markers! In 1971, Rudy Weiland started creating handgun targets out of plastic sheeting so people could practice shooting without having to worry about hitting anything real live! Troy, Michigan is a small town located in the lower peninsula of Michigan on the north side of the Straits of Mackinac. The population was 3,895 at the 2000 census. It is part of Muskegon County and lies about north-northwest of Detroit. The first settler in Troy was Methodist Pastor John Forbes in 1824. The Reverend James Cook had also preached there before that. In 1827, John Whiteside built a sawmill on the west bank of the Ottawa River and started trading with Indians and other settlers east of Detroit. A year later he set up a gristmill on East Main Street, just south of today's State Road 714 which led to his mill being known as "Whitestone". In 1830, George Stephenson founded an ironworks here and began producing rails for transportation across the Straits. By 1840, Troy had 1 store, 2 barsberts (a tavern where alcohol could be bought), 5 blacksmiths and 10 merchants providing goods and services to visiting farmers and business people from Upper Peninsula communities such as Ann Arbor, Midland Township (now Battle Creek), Sterling Heights (then called Harbor Woods), Grosse Pointe Park (now Livonia)and even as far away as Canada! By 1850, when Congress passed an act creating Muskegon County in 1825 out of parts of Washtenaw and Oakland Counties, Troy had become one of its most important settlements because it lay within its boundaries! The local post office was established at what is now 214 Main Street in 1853; soon after it became also home to Highland Presbyterian Church - one of several denominations established by missionaries during this time! New businesses were opening all the time here: grocery stores opened near downtown in 1865; dry goods store Whatcom Co-Op opened in 1870; ice cream parlor Belle Isle Creameryopened around 1903; barbershop moved from Main Street into new building at current day intersection Fourth Avenue North & South Streets in 1907; general store moved into new building constructed 1912 on lot adjoining old post office buildings now used for apartments development Winter Garden Place; movie theater first shown on screen at newly built Theater Square Complex opposite State Hospital 1949 when state hospital moved out Westbrook Boulevard across street from theater complex.)

The name is from an ancient Greek word meaning "prominence" or "headquarters". Troy was called Attica by the Greeks, and it was here that they first settled as farmers in what is now southern Wayne County.
