In 1813, construction started on a road from Detroit to Battle Creek; this road became known as Houghton Road after General David Houghton (1785–1857), an officer in George Washington’s army who fought at Bunker Hill and Saratoga. In 1815, Congress approved a bill providing for township formation within Muskegon County; that same year saw the opening of Griggs Mill by Nicholas Griggs (1784–1856) to produce flour for local marketeers. The mill closed around 1840 but continued to be used as an engine house until it was destroyed by fire in 1903. By 1840 there were 369 registered voters withintown limits; by 1870 there had grown to 514 residents according to US Census bureau records Other towns located within modern day Troy area included Dresden(northwest corner), Hollandale(southwest corner), Putnam(east side), White Cloud(northwest corner), Grand Rapids(central side) & Hillsdale.(northeast corner). Troy, Michigan was a small town in the central sector of the United States until the late 1800s. The community was first founded by early European settlers in 1809 as a Mormon settlement. It later became part of the Territory of Michigan and then the State of Michigan. The town's population reached 10,000 by 1900, but declined to 6,500 by 1930. Troy's only major industry was agriculture until after World War II when it became centered on papermaking. In recent years, Troy has regained some importance as an educational center with two high schools and two colleges serving its citizens.
Troy is a city in the Michigan Territory, and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 24,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. Troy was founded by French fur traders in 1795 as a post on the Grand River, which then served as their route from Fort Gratiot to points east. The first house in town was built by trader Pierre Dorion in 1824. In 1827, John Smeaton bought land near present-day Troy for $2 per acre and began developing it into what is now downtown Troy. In 1830, he donated his home and land to the town for use as its courthouse and jail. In 1836, Henry Mathers started cultivating corn on his property between what is now Elmwood Avenue and Water Street west of Main Street (now White Road). The first crosswalk in town was built here in 1858. By 1870, there were over 20 homes and businesses in downtown Troy with a population of 500 people. A fire destroyed most of downtown Troy on May 3, 1871, but quickly rebuilt following donations from citizens and money from merchants who lost business due to the fire. The electric streetcar line arrived here on December 15, 1904; it ran down White Road northeast to Maple Leaf Circle before terminating at Woodward Avenue northwest of downtown Troy (now McNichols Highway). This line made it possible for residents living east of Woodward Avenue to have access to downtown without having to go outriver or through Dearborn or Lansing Township; this became known as "The Grid". On November 4, 1966 voters approved an amendment to their city charter giving them full control over municipal functions such as zoning laws and building permits - a move that helped spur development around present day Washtenaw Boulevard northward into Downtown Troy proper along with other nearby townships including Southfield Township east of I-75/I-94 junction; these changes led directly to today's current skyline including two highrise buildings – One Center Tower (formerly Sears Tower) located below Huntington Plaza Shopping Center across Washtenaw Boulevard from City Hall while another - 201 E First St., also formerly Sears Tower - stands adjacent thereto within walking distance both retail stores ( Macy's Store )and office space belonging thereto .
