When Trenton, Michigan was founded in 1836, the area had no streetlights. The first streetlight in the city was a small lantern on Union Street. By 1888, Trenton had an extensive system of Municipal Light Company lights. The Municipal Light Company operated until 1931, when it merged with the Detroit Edison Company to form the Detroit Edison Corporation. In 1933, the City of Trenton voted to discontinue its Municipal Light Company lights and replaced them with large incandescent lightbulbs. In 1937, a new traffic signal system was installed at the approach of State Street from Market Place to Spring Streets. In 1951, a new municipal building was completed on First Avenue and Water Streets and it served as the administrative headquarters for all Municipal Light Companies in Trenton. In 1957-1959, a new lighting system was installed on Exchange Boulevard between Wayne and Livingston streets which replaced many of the old Municipal Lights Company lights with large reflector type bulbs. On October 1st, 1978, Jefferson Township assumed control over all Municipal Light Companies within its boundaries effective January 1st following enactment of Act No. 4172 by then Governor George Romney giving township authority over these companies within their borders instead of City Authority which had been previously exercised by Mayor Abramoff & Councilman O’Malley thru agreement between Mayor Abramoff & Councilman O’Malley & Executive Order No./Guideline No.(21). The original Incandescent bulb types used by Trenton were "Cordite" (an early version of today's xenon) GU10s given out free to citizens who subscribed to either newspapers or periodicals back then as part of this agreement; however due to high demand for these bulbs after passage of time some cordite types became unavailable so replacement bulbs were ordered from General Electric Co., also known as GE Lighting at that time through purchase order #9283 made out on July 3rd 1960 with Purchasing Agent being Mr./Mrs./Dr./Mr.(John W.) Fenton(now Mrs.) John Fenton being instrumental in procuring these replacement bulbs during his tenure as purchasing agent; finally upon expiration/cancellation/destroyment/damage caused by fire few remaining cordite type bulbs still remained unserviced causing widespread inconvenience throughout town resulting in some customers pulling down their light fixtures rather than service them because they could not afford replacements - much like we do today!

Trenton is a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 27,362 at the 2010 census. Trenton is the county seat of Wayne County. It is located in the Eastern Standard Time time zone. The first people to live in what is now Trenton were the Hurons and they came from Canada in 1679. In 1836, John Cranch founded this town on land he had bought from the Potawatomi Sioux Confederacy. The town was named for General Nathaniel Banks, who had fought against them during the Mexican-American War. Heading westward after his victory over Mexico in that war and looking for new land to settle on, he discovered this area and named it Trenton because of its resemblance to London, England's Thames River valley. In 1847, Captain James Horseshoe built one of the first mills in what became Trenton; it still stands today as part of Horsehoe Mill Complex #2. On February 14th 1848 – two days after Michigan's statehood – Trenton's incorporation as a village happened with residents voting on a charter prepared by then-Mayor Harry Fenton Wigglesworth Jr.. There were only 50 residents living in Trenton when it incorporated; by 1860 there were 2200 residents living here and it grew rapidly into an agricultural center due to its location near major transportation hubs like Lansing and Detroit. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson delivered a speech at Ford Auditorium calling for increased spending on education throughout America due to impending World War I; since then much progress has been made here including many successful high school football championships including those won by current students such as 2017 Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston (QB) and 2018 National Champion Wolverines linebacker Shea Patterson etc.– making Trenton one of America’s leading college towns! Today’s downtown core still retains much of its early 1800s architecture with specialty shops such as Tiffany & Co., Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s Department Store etc.; but also include more recent buildings such as Cook University Hospital which opened in 2002 adjacent to State Community College District Campus #1A; which houses Drury/Lloyd Glass Company Research Laboratories (now known as McAfee Incorporated); several large retailers like Home Depot / Lowe’s / Menard’s along with dozens of smaller businesses have popped up over the years making this vibrant community one you can call your own! Trenton is one of the oldest towns in Michigan and dates back to 1813 when it was part of the Miami–Detroit area. Trenton has been an agricultural center since beforeveland became a city. The first post office in Trenton was established in 1814. In 1865, Congress passed the Homestead Act which gave immunity from seizure to those who agreed to sell their land to settlers within six months of its enactment. This act led to the growth of Trenton as a city and helped spur development along what would become State Route 495 – now known as I-94 – that ran through downtown Trenton and other areas today. One local legend states that settlers on what is now Old Town Square were so impressed by the beauty of the square they decided not to move until they had explored every inch! Consequently, many old buildings still remain today including: The Masonic Lodge (1819), First Baptist Church (1820), School House No 1 (1825), Post Office Annex (1892), City Hall Annex (1915) and Trenton High School Building/Old Main (1967).
