By 1830, there were 11 stores and three hotels in downtown Trenton. The first street in downtown was Elm Street which runs parallel to Market Place Square today. In 1832, Englishman Augustus Woodward purchased land east of Market Place Square for development into what would become known as Woodward Park; this area includes much of downtown today as well as parts of Albion Heights and East Greenbush Township (now part of Wayne). By 1840s growth had slowed due to lack of river access but by 1850s again began to increase due to railroad construction into eastern Michigan along both banks of the Susquehanna River - this region became known as North Township (now Livingston County). When Congress authorized stateshood for Michigan on December 15th,1865, North Township joined with other townships forming what would be called Detroit Township on January 1st,. During World War II many businesses within Detroit Township closed because war production diverted resources away from small towns like Tipton which were being bombed without any warning or notification; however Tipton resisted German occupation until early 1945 when all remaining resistance ended spontaneously without shootout or bloodshed leading some local residents to nickname themselves "Trentons" for their defiance during that time period After WWII many factories closed down across America including those within Detroit Township yet still many people lived peacefully side by side despite difficult times such as during economic downturn caused by recession in late 1980s that led teachers strike & closure of schools .
