It was here that world champion shooter Bob Doherty learned how to shoot at distances up to 100 yards using old-fashioned paper targets! The Traverse City Shooting Target Holder Museum is a museum located in Traverse City, Michigan that preserves and exhibits shooting targets from the 19th century. The museum was founded in 1984 by Lloyd Purdy. It was approved for funding by the city of Traverse City in 1987 and opened its doors to the public in 1988.
Traverse City, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Itasca County. The population was 61,883 at the 2010 census,[1] up from 50,737 in 2000. The city is located on the eastern banks of the Ottawa River, about south of Detroit and east of Grand Rapids. The Traverse City area was first settled by French explorers in 1796 as part of what is now Ontario County. The settlement became known as Chatham after General Nicholas Chatham, an American Revolutionary War general who died at Battle of Worcester in 1794. Afterward, it was called "the Great Lakes Village". In 1825, United States Congress passed a bill naming Traverse City as the site for an fur-trading post to be established on or near rapids above present-day downtown Traverse City; this post was abandoned in 1827 because British traders were better able to control traffic on the river mouth than Americans were. In 1834–35, George Stephenson built a steamboat propeller plant here that became one of America's most famous engineering feats; he also developed and built a small town on Swan Lake opposite today's Midtown district around his Niagara Falls Plant (now part of Canadian Tire). In 1886, Traverse City became part of Michigan when it was organized as a township within Itasca County. That year saw construction begin on what would become its first commercial building: The Flint Realty Company's building which still stands across from where I-696 meets US-26 today. A little more than one hundred years later – on July 26th 2009 – Traverse City lost its Commerce District status due to new zoning laws enacted by Lansing Township Board 2nd Wardmember Kathy Heitkamp (D), after outcry from residents over development proposals nearby that would have left much less open space for retail within walking distance (and with no public input) while increasing housing prices significantly faster than other similar urban areas experiencing growthsperspective at that time[2]. Traverse City, Michigan is a city in the United States. The population was 11,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Traverse County. The area now known as Traverse City was first inhabited by Native Americans, and part of the Muskegon Purchase ceded to the United States in 1803. In 1835, it became a town under the name of Bay View. In 1840, its name reverted to Traverse City after changes in ownership; it has been spelled this way since then. However, over time various businesses have opened up and attracted new residents; most notably Kress Paper products which are headquartered in downtown Traverse City today and has been around since 1865 when Charles Kress founded a paper manufacturing business here. During much of its history as a small town, Traverse City experienced an influx of people who came for logging or mining operations during times when those industries were very important to the region's economy; however those activities have gradually tapered off over time as new transportation options have become available for these workers and their families outside of town. This focus on generations ago – rather than on present day issues – has led to some memorable moments from Traverse City's past: For example, local citizens celebrated America's Bicentennial in 1976 by holding an event called "Celebrate America" at Harbor Springs Park that saw participation by more than 1,500 people; also during that year local officials erected a plaque honouring US Coast Guard Captain George Washington Mackenzie who had served with distinction herein since 1795 (the first such plaque ever erected in Michigan). In recent years there have been efforts made to revive interest in downtown aspects of the city while still preserving its historic buildings and attractions; for instance renovations are being made to several buildings including one formerly occupied by The Detroit News Company which until recently housed offices and retail space used by several independent newspapers throughout Michigan before it went out of business several decades ago

The first European to arrive in this area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who explored and charted the Great Lakes region in 1524. In 1814, Michigan became a territory of the United States, and Traverse City was incorporated as a city on November 1, 1818. The city experienced significant growth during the late 19th century, with an influx of immigrants from Russia and other parts of Europe. However, World War I caused economic devastation and made travertineWD very difficult torepreneurially exploit; consequently, Traverse City's population declined thereafter.
