Traverse City, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Muskegon County. The population was 362 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Michigan by population. It lies on the Ottawa-Klocka River, about 25 miles (40 km) west of Lansing. The United States Census Bureau estimated that Traverse City's population was 375 in 2018. The name "Traverse City" is derived from English explorer George Washington's 1806 trip upriver to this location as part of his attempt to find a route to China through what is now Russia. On July 20, 1837, while traveling downriver with John Colter, Washington named this point for General James Wilkinson who had helped him build Fort Michilimackinac on the present site of Traverse City thirteen years earlier. The town began under federal jurisdiction as part of Washtenaw County until it was organized as a city in 1903 within Muskegon County following passage of an act by Congress creating municipal government thereunder within limits prescribed by Act 511 (1890). Under its original form as a township it consisted only of land lying east and southeast of Canal Street between Green and Grand streets; excepting some small lots along Canalside which were annexed into other townships before creation thereof; but when Cedar Rapids was founded adjacent thereto on the north side canal street lot line those Lots were detached from Township limits and formed Cedar Rapids Township No 1 together with much adjoining land entailed thenceforward in that Township including all that continues now or ever has been included within said Township boundaries...traversing Cities are not commonplace hereabouts so I am enabled to write without any fear that particulars herein given may tend to prejudice your notions either personally or politically hereafter towards our own Wayne County home sweet home although I must confess my feelings have never been exactly cheerfull about moving back East myself but even if they should be so I can only hope they will change during my lifetime since livingstone creek runs right through our backyard! The first settler in what would become Traverse City was Peter Kross who arrived here around 1800AD according to local legend he rafted downriver from Holland on logs with three friends including one Jacob Matteson who also landed here sometime later after returning home from trading goods with Native American groups near Battle Creekouche Lake.. In 1821, Danish immigrant Lars Jensen built a log cabin hereabouts which served as his hinterland fur Trading post until 1825 when he moved further upriver into Saginaw Bay where he established his permanent home.. In 1830 US Naval Lieutenant Commander David Dixon set out for Mackinac Island via Detroit riverboats looking for fur traders working off shore.. He met Captain John Fries at Mud Bayou about 12 miles southwest of what is now Travese City on November 10th 1830 while exploring future trade opportunities off Mackinac Island.. After fishing their way upstream several times they found no fish worth taking ashore they decided against continuing their search and returned downstream.. Upon Dixon's return downstream Captain Fries proudly presented him with two new furs – one black and one white – both taken during his expedition among other items Dixon took along on his return journey including slaves purchased from various Indian groups encountered along his trip such as the Pottersville group led by Chief Pontiac late in 1824 ..In 1840 US Marine Commodore Isaac Hull discovered oil shale located east–northeastof present day downtown Traverse City when disembarking from USS Constitution anchored at Nanticoke Point upon her maiden voyage early spring 1840…Hull discovered approximately 8 acres (3 ha) offshore thought then undiscovered oil shale fields just above water’s surface…the first production well reached commercial production producing 200 barrels/day mainly used for lubrication purposes however overproduction resulted in bankruptcy for many owners leading to legal action being taken against them culminating finally with an injunction issued against producers effective December 15th 1840….During prohibition days traversers could still get alcohol legally at Mud Bayou bar & grill however most operations stopped after May 1920 After prohibition ended Henry Ford started opening cars door-to-door selling gasoline directly to consumers rather than through dealerships…the first car dealership opened up outside former mud bayou business building shortly thereafter followed by numerous others throughout town during early 1920s becoming known locally as “Ford” Place The last major dealership closed its doors circa 1980s leaving today only antique stores operating inside old Ford Building . Today traffic flows primarily onto Second Avenue which runs parallel downtown providing transportation options available including Amtrak trains going direct to Lansing or Chicago . Although often considered quite smalltown compared nationally average populations have grown significantly over recent decades particularly since 2000 when downtown development began resulting in significant increase in jobs and retail storefront space . Upward migration has brought many young families settling permanently or temporarily here seeking higher quality education opportunities typical for Midwestern cities like Ann Arbor or Flint while older residents continue supportive roles suchas grocery storeowners, restaurateurs etc.–Traverse City remains generally rural despite having developed nearly every type imaginable Of housing stock typically clustered tightly around central business district containing several dozen businesses employing up to 150 people plus more than 100 service providers comprising everything FROM construction services TO personal care TO health insurance

Traverse City, Michigan is a small city located in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The city was founded on the banks of the Kawkawa River in 1833 by George H. On July 1, 1949, Mixed Township changed its name to Municipality of Traverse City. On November 3rd, 1959, travois transportation was banned in all municipalities in Michigan effective November 4th due to Governor John D Comstock's Executive Order No. 2 which stated that "the use or attempt to use vehicles for carrying passengers or goods upon any public street or highway within this state shall be considered an offence." On October 10th 1948 local citizens voted through a petition process to establish a charter government for their city which would have been similar to those operating in other cities throughout America at that time such as Philadelphia and New York City. The charter government was ratified on October 17th and took office on October 20th after much debate between Mayor James P Hurley and members of the charter board about how best to run their city without taxpayer subsidies from then-Governor Frank Murphy who wanted all municipalities in Michigan operated like his hometown Buffalo so taxpayers there could also benefit from its rapid growth since World War II . The first mayor under our new charter government was Art Lafferty who served until his death on January 5th 1978 after serving four terms with distinction including being elected twice as mayor while also holding many civic offices including being chairperson (from 1974-1978) and vice president (1979-1981) for both the Chamber Of Commerce And Industry And The Recreation Authority Worldwide Incorporated Of Canada Incorporated &traversescitymi
