In 1849, Judge Augustus Pendergast purchased land at what is now North Main Street for $600[3] which he used as a jail for debtors until he moved into an new building at Third Avenue and State Street which served as his courthouse until 1909. In 1861, General George Armstrong Custer made history when he became the first American general to cross over the Great Lakes - arriving at Marquette Landing near present day Harbor Springs before marching through town to take possession of Indian Territory east of Battle Creek

Municipal growth slowed during World War II because many citizens enlisted or served in military service; however, after V-E Day in 1945, Traverse City began to experience a surge of new businesses due to wartime shortages that had tightened prices throughout much of America.
