Traverse City, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 797 at the 2010 census. In 1859, Traverse City became an incorporated city under Act No. 148 of 1861; it adopted a new charter establishing it as an open-air commercial center with a beehive-shaped building called "The Capitol" as its symbol. By 1870, Traverse City had developed into one of North America's leading industrial cities with mills manufacturing everything from textiles to shoes to guitars;EMENTs such as Ford Motor Co., General Electric Co., Singer Sewing Machine Corp., Armour Rubber & Manufacturing Co., Chrysler Corporation (later Chrysler Group), Coleman Grain Elevator Company (later Coleman grain elevator company) and others established major businesses there. However, during World War I much of this activity stopped because production was redirected to munitions plants in other parts of America; however, some important companies did continue operations such as Alcoa Aluminum Corporation (now aluminum producer Alcoa), American Can Factory (now can factoryAmerican Can Brands), Briggs & Stratton Engine Works Incorporated (now Briggs & Stratton engine manufacturer), Eastern Steel Mills Incorporated (now steel millEastern Steel Products) and Western Pipe & Tube Works Incorporated (now pipe& tube worksWestern Pipe & Tube). In 1955–1957 Donnelly Paper Company merged with Whitney paper products company to form Donnell Paper Products Corporation; this company continued producing paper products until its bankruptcy in 1984 (). During World War II many buildings were destroyed by fire including: "The Capitol", "Donnell Building", "the old white schoolhouse" and "the old blacksmith shop". Many other buildings were built over time but have not been preserved or are now demolished: "Empire Dairy", "Bellevue Schoolhouse", "Stroud House" and more recently “Kirkland” housing development located off Saginaw Road near US 131A about 5 miles west/northwest of downtown Traverse City proper

The Panic of 1893 ended all but brief periods of prosperity for Traverse City before another period of growth began in the late 19th century. This new era saw increased commercial activity throughout downtown as well as continued investment by entrepreneurs who saw opportunity in what would become an increasingly technological society. During this time, Traverse City also became known for its luxury hotels and internationally renowned restaurants – something that continues to be an importantstay today. In addition to its burgeoning economy and cultural attractions, Traverse City also experienced significant social changes during this time; such as becoming more racially diverse with increasing numbers coming from eastern European backgrounds or black Americans migrating into the city after abolitionist movements gained momentum across North America.
