Traverse City, Michigan was home to the world’s first gun light display, which took place in 1887. The display featured a large model of a battleship mounted on a pedestal in the center of town. A committee was formed consisting of prominent citizens chaired by Mayor Augustus Woodward which recommended that Trails Crossing Bridge be built crossing Mockingbird Creek . This bridge was completed by April 15th 1841 costing $4,000 ($100 per foot) less than any other bridge at that time locally or nationally . A plaque celebrating this event can still be seen near intersectionof Main Street & Ionia Avenue
