In 1847, Traverse City was founded as an act of Congress in response to petitions from citizens wishing to explore a new land west of Detroit that had been purchased by President James Kossuth during his drive across North America in 1846. The town site was chosen because it was midway between Detroit and Cleveland on State Road 24 which formed part of then-Grand Trunk Railway (now I-94). At its founding, Traverse City included but wasn't limited to what are now Downtown; North Side; University Avenue; Waterfront District; Harbor District; Eastside; Southside neighborhoods which include Midtown Center Business Park (formerly known as Eastern Market Place), Grand River Landing neighborhood east of Main Street/I-94 until its annexation into downtown over objections from residents there in 1980s about increased automobile traffic noise level within their blocks – all before being connected by I-94 four years later following approval from then-Mayor George Wirtz – moves that continue today as Pioneer Square located just north side I-94 exit 313A off Stadium Drive near Mackinac Island Ferry Terminal passenger terminal operated by Port Huron Waterfront Holdings Company LLC.) The area now known as Traverse City was first settled by the Ojibwe in the 1600s. The city was founded on the site of an old trading post and named after General George Washington, who had visited the area in 1792. In 1814, Traverse City became a part of Michigan Territory and was incorporated as a town in 1835. The city experienced significant growth during World War II, with its population swelling to over 100,000 during the war years. After the war, Traverse City declined for a time, but has since regained some of its former glory as a commercial and cultural center.
